Thanks Shaun! It's a nice diversion from work, isn't it? If only for a short time....

So tranquil. And I find myself rooting hard for those bears to catch those salmon...ha ha!

Baz 07-28-2019 09:30 AM

That time of year again....lot of activity.....salmon are running!

LOVE the little cubs out this morning!

Alaska is pretty great in summer and a bear cam is a much safer way to observe them. We did a black bear salmon run experience and watched them from an elevated tower. Our guide was vigilant as some folks were stalked by bears on that trail recently.

Never been to Katmai but it's on my bucket list. I love bears - from a distance...lol...

^^ Holy Crapola!!!

flatbutt 07-29-2019 07:28 AM

that's a well fed bear...or the guy didn't look too tasty.

Jeff Higgins 07-29-2019 07:37 AM

Talk to any hunting guide who has been at it awhile up in Alaska, and they will all tell you about encounters with big bears that are very similar to the one in that video. The most hair raising one I heard was when one of the guides I was hunting with told me about meeting a big brown on a very narrow "trail" (just a game trail, really) through one of those "dog hair" alder thickets that line the rivers. They literally bumped into one another. They both jumped back, then stood there staring at one another, "for about three or four weeks". The bear finally approached, the guy squeezed as far off the trail as he could, and the bear just squeezed on by - "excuse me...". The thing kept walking and never looked back.

ramonesfreak 07-29-2019 09:25 AM

I find hanging around bears in the wild like that more terrifying than free swimming with sharks for some reason. No way I could have calmly held that video camera

Rusty Heap 07-29-2019 10:01 AM

our local PNW black bear just ate 3 garbage cans at my direct neighbors.

it drug 2 cans a hundred feet. 1 can still MIA

I actually got knocked flat on my back and run over by a black bear one time. I'm still not sure which one of us was the more terrified...

A buddy and I and our two dogs were out fly fishing a favorite creek in the North Cascades. As per my usual practice when doing such things, I was armed with a big bore single action revolver. On the way out, however, when we were about half a mile from the trailhead, I put it in my daypack, so as not to alarm the natives. Sure as hell, about five minutes later, the dogs (who had run ahead a bit) came running back with a god damn bear in tow. My buddy was in front of me, so he saw it first, and immediately started stammering "b b b b BEAR!!!!!".

So, that is where I "sprang" into action, throwing my day pack on the ground to retrieve my revolver. The damn zipper got stuck. Of course. There I was, kneeling in the trail, when all three critters pulled up. The bear suddenly realized he was now amongst humans, kind of grunted in "bear" what was probably roughly equivalent to "oh schitt", and took off like a shot - right over the top of me, over the downhill side of the trail, and off into the devil's club.

They kind of stink, on the bottom side.

That stink was most likely coming from your underpants :D

varmint 07-09-2021 04:14 PM

Bears have significant BO. In the brush you can smell them before you see them.

I smell a stink when walking the dogs I turn and go home.

herr_oberst 07-09-2021 04:55 PM

Imagine being a salmon. Just a few more miles and you can finish the job, just gotta get up over a few more of these waterfalls
and then POW, a hairy catchers mitt bristling with sharp 4" spikes grabs you out of thin air and a big ol' stinky mammal puts paid to your dreams of spawning......

Life. Nobody said it was fair.

Meet this guy in my backyard in Big Bear a couple of weeks ago

Back in the mid 80's we got picked up at the end of a day of flying the drill in northern Quebec, we noticed fuel leaking outta the bottom of the chopper, a solid fuel line had cracked. The pilot shut it down and we called for another chopper to pick us up, we flew back in with the part and an engineer to replace it a couple of days later and a bear had got at the chopper, Bell 206, both doors on 1 side and the cargo compartment door were ripped off and there were 8-10 claw holes in the skin of the machine where the bear had stood up, the holes were in the top of the chopper, above the doors. The cargo door was toast, there was some hinge damage on one of the main doors if I remember correctly, the back seat was ripped out and destroyed and the foam from the seat was gone, presumably eaten. It happens in real life not just in Hollywood.

Working hard to win Fat Bear Week.

Evans, Marv 07-13-2024 04:39 PM

When I worked in Sequoia and Kings Canyon Natl. Parks, I came into contact with bears many times. We had to trap bears that came iinto the campgrounds and became too familiar with that environment. In the back country, I discovered the best way to scare bears was to imitate the sound of a rattle sneke (as best you could).

Most people do not understand bears at all. In general....they do not want to have anything to do with humans. Most are easily scared off using a variety of methods.

I've never heard of this technique, Marv....good stuff! :)

^ Right, that's why every week on "Scary Bear Attacks" someone is getting eaten or mauled....

Don't fall for that BS...

Is that a quote from Timothy Treadwell?

varmint 09-09-2025 04:14 PM

They’re cute til they’re not.

Past few weeks a woman jogger we sort of know was drug off and mauled down by the river. She had to be medivaced to anchorage. And a kid on an atv was chased by a brown bear on gas well trail just behind us.

So I’m packing again.
