I remember the first time most of us ever saw a 916. Back in '94 or so. One pulled into Alice's parking lot one Sunday morning and most of the 200 - 300 bikers standing around flocked to it.
Was amazing to not just marvel at the bike but the crowd was eerily quiet and was standing a good 15 - 20 ft. away...as if in the presence of something profound. . ~~~~~~~~~~ . ~~~~~~~~~~~~ . ~~~~~~~~~~ https://www.facebook.com/alicesrestaurantwoodside/ . ~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I remember as well. I resolved then and there (Bagel Boy, Sioux Falls, SD) to own one and have for the past 17 years. I don't ride it much as it is garage art.

My 996S was living room art when I wasn't riding it. A "fashion statement" my buddies called it.

Never heard of these. Thanks for posting.
I rode a 998 not so long ago. It was an interesting experience.

if anyone is interested in a meticulously cared for 916, I will be re-listing mine on ebay this sunday. it sold last week but the winning bidder failed to complete the sale.
maddening that someone would bid up but back out...ebay I guess? |

[QUOTE=peteremsley;9720709]I think new photos is a good idea. I assume you've got it on craigslist, etc? While very flakey too, they seem to flake a lot earlier - not waste 0 days or whatever and not come through.[/QUOTEr
pete, I have avoided craigslist as I don't want to deal with or talk to tire kickers. ebay is a better method to sell properly but functionally...it is far from perfect. if it does not sell this time I think it will stay in my care for another year or so. I love my ducatis but am not riding much anymore so keeping them is not too important. |

Ferraripete... raresportbikes.com gets a lot of traffic and will post an ad for sale for something like 35 or 40 bucks, if I recall correctly.
That early 916 is priced way too high. There's nothing special about the fact that it was built in another factory and I sold my '98 SPS for less money than that with similar miles... JR |

I loved my 748S, but not the most comfortable bike in the world.....

My vote would be for a big, newer ADV bike. A new R1200GS is probably good for 1,000 mile days without too much problem.

But given a 'one bike only' choice I would likely go with a VFR or a GS.

The most interesting result of the ride was that, for a short time, my R1200ST felt like a Gold Wing. And its a very agile, fast, machine. |
