Debarking a dog.

You have tried bark collars I presume.

Was working on training my 1 yo Golden to talk (hello, I want out, etc). Actually encourage barking on command. Left her with a trainer for boarding for 2 weeks when I had to go out of town (rare). Don't know what she did but it has taken me over a year to get my Golden to bark/speak and she is still hesitant.

I've always found that when my dogs have had a bad behavior that training the behavior to be done on command stops the dog from doing it on it's own. For example when someone comes to my door, I train the dog to bark saying "Who is that" excitedly. Put my hand up and say hush until I give the command. Dog gets that I want it to bark when I say and doesn't otherwise. My brother thinks it is weird that when he comes to the door and I'm not home, the dog doesn't bark, but does when I am home. Brother doesn't realize I say "Who is that" before she starts barking when i am home.

Learn to train bad habits when in HS and read an animal training book by a guy that trained a lot of the animals used in Disney movies back then. His example was digging holes in the yard. My first Golden started digging and it worked very well. Also fun to have her help me dig when I was actually digging.

You do not deserve to own the dog. Get the poor guy to someone who knows that owning a pet like a dog is more than something to dabble with. This sickens me to even hear that someone is seriously thinking about this. I hope this is a bad joke.

Before I was borned my parents had a really good dog. The town they lived in started leash laws. The dog always hung around my brothers and sisters and it was just heart broken to have to be tie up of fenced in away from the kids. My parents gave the dog to some friends that lived on big a ranch so the dog could run free. They said it immediately became attached to everyone in their family and was one of the best cattle dogs they've ever had.

The male has responded to training and for a Dachshund is quiet and well behaved. Same personal training with the new female and she is quiet when I am around. But when I leave her she barks at the wind.

Linderpat, go screw yerself. I have owned Dachshunds for 35 years. Never had one that wouldn't respond to training, training collars or other methods.....I am considering the LAST option.

We have 3 - 2 labs and a Dachshund/Chawawa mix. The big choco lab is a barker - loud! He won't bark so much when I'm home but he does go ballistic when I am not around. Its his job (or so he thinks). We tried a shock collar on him but I think he actually digs the spark.

The way I understand it is that barking is done for a few reasons. In my case, he feels it is his job to protect and inform. He's a working dog. All dogs need structure and purpose and working dogs even more so.

I have noticed that the longer the walk I take him on, the calmer he is. I also work him inside for several minutes. We do a form of 'search for the snack' which can be a carrot piece, a piece of apple or a kibble. I put him in stay position, I will rub the snack on the floor, put it under a dish and then release him to find it. All 3 dogs love this. I have done a complicated route and used several upside down dishes. I noticed that it also calms him down - maybe he thinks that after a session of this he has done his work for a few hours?

I don't have answers but I would try to convince you not to do the surgery. Its gotta be painful and costly.

I adopted a mini schnauzer that was debarked. She was my coolest dog. Obedient and smart. For the longest time I just thought she was quiet. Then she tried to bark. You could almost feel her frustrated trying to make noise. I couldn't do it now.

M.D., thinks it's his job...all the more reason to train him to bark at stuff on command. Get him to where he barks at the stuff when you tell him, and stops when you tell him. He will learn to only bark at stuff when he is told. That has been my experience. It does take some training effort though.

My golden sometimes wakes me in the middle of the night. When I say what do you want, she very plainly and clearly says. "I want out." Other times when she wakes me up, I have fallen asleep on the couch and she doesn't say "I want out". She just barks to wake me up and wants me to move my feet so she can get on the couch as well.

You can do it. You can train that dog when and when not to bark!

We have one for our little dogs. It really works! Once they associated the noise with we only have to get it off the shelf and show it to them and they quiet down.
Our neighbor had two BIG dogs that he left outside and they barked incessantly. I hung the bark box on the fence when I wanted to enjoy being outside they would shut up immediately.

Have you tried something as silly and simple as leaving a radio or the TV on?

We had the small hand-held version of ultrasonic which worked perfectly. (I sure miss Snoop .. would trade the barking problem to have him back.)

Some dogs will respond to ultrasonic, and some won't. We haven't used one ourselves, but that's what I've read. My dachshund doesn't seem sensitive to noise, so I don't think he'd care. Our rescue would probably be cowering and shaking in a corver if we had an ultrasonic.

Our dachshund barks if we both leave the house. We tried a bunch of stuff, but the only thing that works is this bark collar, 89$.

It zaps them but it's not bad (yes, I tested it on myself). And it starts out at a low level of shock and increases the level until they stop.

Joe - hey, I know some of the responses above are extreme so I'll share what I know about dog behavior. Assuming the pooch is physically healthy and no issues then his / her barking may be reactive to something in the environment.

As said above - the dog could be relieving stress or fear of something. If you can't identify what is causing it, research to find a good trainer in your area to get their opinion. This is definitely not a one-size-fits-all solution. You may have to find and interview several trainers to find a good fit.

The only time I have seen dogs de-barked is my Collie breeder had her adult dogs done that way as she had @24 males / females on premises. We were concerned and asked her about this and she said she'd never get any sleep as the kennels were 100ft from her little farm house.

Point here is she had a lot of dogs, 1 would start to bark for whatever reason and the rest would chime in. You have 1 dog .........................something else is going on.

I tied the Sunbeam egg which is a stand off item, the one I ordered is a collar. I can always return it and try the Masraum option. I think a remote controlled one would be best.

The one collar I tried did a buzz then after getting louder, a zap. I think she is too clueless to associate the zap with her misbehavior.

De-barking is my LAST option. Other than giving her away....
