New Person at Our Monthly Muzzzle Loader Match....Surprise!
Yesterday during the heavy winds and on and off again rain we had our monthly black powder match. Had a new shooter show up and he asked if he could join so our director said yes of course. He pulled our a 50 caliber flintlock with no barrel markings and as I looked closely it appeared not super smooth even though nicely rounded. I asked who made the rifle and he said his great, great, great grandfather including the barrel, lock and trigger! Seems he lived in MN right at the Canadian border and was the local area blacksmith, gun maker and gunsmith for over 40 years and passed it onto his son. I gave him a pound of powder as he had some 3x but no 2x so off he went. He took a couple shots to get settled down and he said that had happened since he started shooting at age 6!!!!
I asked him what he did for a living and said he was in the US Marines so never got a lot of practice now day as he was a Staff SGT in charge or 60mm or 81mm mortar crews depending on what was needed at the time. He said in a month or so a whole bunch of them were on their way to South Korea??????? Hum, hope he gets back okay. |
