Scholarship endowments
This is what shameless promotion looks like. When it comes to getting the word out about this scholarship fund, my depravity knows no boundaries. Admin, if this breaks rules, delete it and don't worry about it, but I'm going for it. Since I derive zero personal financial gain from any efforts, I can be as shameless as I can imagine when asking for money for it. It's all about the kids.
Anyone else on the forum have a protected perpetual scholarship endowment named after them? Not my name only, but I am credited as the sole creator and fund raiser. I get bragging rights, at least so far. This one is flawed. When I set it up at the Albuquerque Community Foundation, for it's protection from raiders, I did not realize that by not having it's own IRS Tax ID number, it is not qualified to receive any form of grant money from any source. It can only increase the balance by reinvestment of earned interest left over after the awards and admin costs, plus private donations. Being the sole fund raiser since inception in 1995, a part time volunteer effort, I was able to raise it from $15,000 to a little over $40,000. I have no shame when it comes to promoting it, but I must admit, I am a dismal failure. It's the blind pig thing. Even a blind pig can find a truffle every now and then. Doesn't stop me from trying. I need to create a 401( c ) ( 4 ) pass through entity with it's own IRS number. That's all, shameless plug Donate securely here

What criteria is used to decide who receives benefits from the scholarship?

No, thank you. If you were to reward people for their accomplishments instead of the opposite I might be interested. Last edited by sammyg2; 09-13-2017 at 10:00 AM.. |

...been a fan since season 1. I've seen worse in real life, but mostly not.

The first recipient, and typical of every recipient since inception, had these accomplishments: 4.2 cumulative GPA heavy in math and sciences Lettered in multiple sports A list of extra-curriculars as long as your arm Years of long-term part time job history living with her 3 siblings and single mother in a two bedroom rented 1960 10 x 60 Redman "trailer house" on $9600 a year in Anthony, NM, one of the poorest communities in America. Simply living in a mobile home does not guarantee anything. Besides, we get 40 applicants for two grants, it has to be merit based. Who receives the benefit? The two student who qualify get a $1,000 grant to go to whatever college or university or trade school they choose. One of our early winners is working on his PhD in mechanical engineering at Stanford. He credits this grant for getting him started. Yes it's small and insignificant, but not to two young New Mexicans each year.

What's an appropriate contribution, you ask?
$20 (a year, for the rest of your life, please) would be considered a minimum effort. Too Much? How about just one double sawbuck? You get official recognition by name only in the ACF annual report as being one of the few, one of the brave...

I've spent some time in Douglas, New Mexico.
It's not much different from Anthony. Right up the road. Excluding anyone who doesn't live in a single-wide in Anthony could be interpreted as racial bias. |

New Mexico has one of the highest per capita MH occupancies in the country, but the entire state might have 1.5 million people. The whole state is in the boonies. The state is the boonies. I've lived in California, Texas, Virginia, Florida, Massachusetts, Maryland, Rhode Island, West Virginia, Kentucky, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Colorado, which are all somewhat similar, except for geography; and then there's New Mexico...I spent 30 years there, probably end up back there.
