Is 2 parts epoxy toxic?

The gut of my bathroom sink had small pits, very small. I used 2 parts epoxy to fill them up then sanded them smooth, but then stopped for a second thinking this water goes into our mouth every morning. Do you guys think it's ok or should it be replaced?

Stop drinking water out of your bathroom sink and you'll be fine.

Seriously, I'm not seeing how one gets water in their mouth that has previously been "exposed" to the epoxy in the bottom of a sink, but regardless I don't see cured epoxy as being a health risk.
The dust you may have potential inhaled during the sanding was probably more harmful. YMMV, not a doctor, yadda, yadda, yadda.

What is the "gut" of a sink? I would drink from an epoxy bowl before Id drink from any gut.

I would not worry about cured epoxy, and certainly not after I had run the water briefly.

Quote:
The primary risk associated with epoxy use is often related to the hardener component and not to the epoxy resin itself. Amine hardeners in particular are generally corrosive, but may also be classed as toxic or carcinogenic/ mutagenic. Aromatic amines present a particular health hazard (most are known or suspected carcinogens), but their use is now restricted to specific industrial applications, and safer aliphatic or cycloaliphatic amines are commonly employed.

Liquid epoxy resins in their uncured state are mostly classed as irritant to the eyes and skin, as well as toxic to aquatic organisms. Solid epoxy resins are generally safer than liquid epoxy resins, and many are classified non-hazardous materials. One particular risk associated with epoxy resins is sensitization. The risk has been shown to be more pronounced in epoxy resins containing low molecular weight epoxy diluents.[15] Exposure to epoxy resins can, over time, induce an allergic reaction. Sensitization generally occurs due to repeated exposure (e.g. through poor working hygiene or lack of protective equipment) over a long period of time. Allergic reaction sometimes occurs at a time which is delayed several days from the exposure. Allergic reaction is often visible in the form of dermatitis, particularly in areas where the exposure has been highest (commonly hands and forearms). Epoxy use is a main source of occupational asthma among users of plastics.[16] Bisphenol A, which is used to manufacture a common class of epoxy resins, is a known endocrine disruptor.

sorry guys, I meant the core/gut of the faucet on bathroom sink, not the sink itself. And when I said the water goes into our mouth, I meant when we brush our teeth, not drinking this water.
Sorry that I wasn't clear.

A picture would be helpful.

Generally, Bondo ( or other similar epoxy based filler), is not waterproof. It requires topcoating.

If you are wondering if epoxy, in general, is safe for potable water containers? That is the typical interior lining of most water treatment ponds, piping and storage tanks.

You most likely have been drinking out of epoxy your whole life.

My water pipes run under the slab and several years ago they started developing leaks. Options were to run new pipes in attic, or have epoxy coating blown into the pipes.

So obviously at least ONE type of epoxy is safe for drinking water.

Some epoxy types leach dangerous chemicals into the water. Others don't. For instance, dentists use epoxy that cures with exposure to light. Find the kind that is safe.

Sorry that I wasn't clear.
I was just sort of poking fun at the term "gut" for a sink part. But now Im just more confused as to what you really mean.

I lost my front teeth at age 8 in a car accident. The false replacements are bonded with epoxy, so I have the stuff in my mouth 24/7 for almost 30 years...hope its not toxic

Epoxy is toxic in it's liquid form. Usually associated with epoxy sensitivity which is a sort of rash itch. Once you have epoxy sensitivity it will be irritated when ever you use it. The sensitivity comes from skin contact while the epoxy is still wet.

I get it all the time. Very irritating lasts a few days. Wear your gloves to keep it off your hands or for big jobs Tyvek suit.
