When my sister moved a bunch of stuff across country she rented a U-Haul truck and a car trailer. Filled up both the truck and the car. Only had to rent them one way. You could take your stuff out and drive the towed vehicle back. Or drive out, pickup the U-Haul truck and trailer and haul your stuff back.

Maybe fly back to California and rent a larger U-Haul/Penske truck for a one-way rental?

2300 for a truck plus fuel @ 8mpg. I'm a cheap bastard. My ML350 turbo Diesel and a trailer is the way I wanna go.
