Hello Australians.

I'm trying to find out more information on Charles Lawson, early settler in the Bombala/Monaro district of NSW. He is mentioned a number of times in Early History of the Bombala End of the Monaro District Maureen McGee Station.

I don't have access to Ancestory .com .au and have only found limited information about Charles Lawson. Ideally I'd like to know where he came from in the UK, plus any other interesting things.

So if you are a history buff, of have any friends who are good at finding out things, any information is much appreciated.

I just sent this to my friend. She's normally very reliable. (nudge nudge wink wink )

Do you know that he was born in the UK? Do you have any age information about him? If you had to guess his date of birth within a few decades, what would you say? I'm pretty good at rooting stuff out of the interwebs....

Thanks Harddrive. But that's a different Charles Lawson.

Clues are, this one emigrated to Australia in the very early 1800's. He moved to Bombala/Monaro district of New South Wales. This is in the southern area near State of Victoria. He set up a twenty six square mile farm called Craigie - The name suggests he was from Scotland, but there are Craigie this and Craigie that all over the UK, so who knows. He had a son born in 1836 called John James Lawson who latter married Elanore Makin Smith in St Stephen's Church, in Newtown Sydney, NSW on 21 September 1871.

I'm curious to know in more detail where he is actually from and on what date/ship did he arrive on.

Hi Peter, did your friend in NSW come up with anything?

I suspect the early emigrants to Australia didn't bother documenting their past as they were to busy concentrating on surviving then enjoying their new life in a new land.

Local historic societies might find this best.
Immigration records?
Emigration records?
Ships logs?
Early newspapers archived?

Why is the Australian arsencestory dotcom website blocked to a New Zealander?
