Agree 100%
I got my 964 c4 in 2012 for 21,500... it was a *mint* 60k car. I drove the snot out of it for 3-4 years and sold it at a significant gain I got my euro SC in 2013 for (cough) 7k... it was (is) REALLY rough but had a rebuilt engine (930-10) and I've since rebuilt the transmission. It's ratty, but super fun. I'll never sell it. I just picked up my 996 c4s a few weeks ago, definitely at the "bargain" end of the spectrum. Going to do brakes, clutch and IMSB over the winter. I may keep it, but I'm keeping an eye on prices and may sell too. It's a fantastic car but I don't LOVe it... maybe it will grow on me I still see some really cool cars in the <10k range: - big 60's convertibles (Galaxies, Caddies, etc) - VW cabrios & mk2 GTIs - Alfa spiders... I'm tempted to stuff a warehouse full of these. They are ridiculously undervalued |

however I reserve the right to do something immature and try to put aside $10-20K so I can have another fun car if I possible... the $5-10K mustang's look interesting, but I really would like independent rear suspension... $10-20 will put me in 996 territory (if they don't start going up). I would be okay with a Corvette but my wife hates them. Then there is the Japanese option... |

The only way that late model 3000GT is $3k is if it has a blown motor

I had one of those first gen, Mr2 back in college. One of my all time favorite sports cars. I pay 5200 bucks for it with 50,000 miles on it. The guy bought his wife a new BMW and let the MR2 go for dirt cheap. I turned around and sold it after 7 years of playing with the thing and did nothing other then brakes and tires and sold it with 90,000 on the odo to a friends of my dad's for 850.00 because I jsut bought a 3000 GT VR4. Dumbest thing I had ever done.
The Mr2 is one hell of a sports car. Durable too. I used to beat on that lil' thing. I don't think that blue is factory color? If you like cars, try and buy and play with them because one day, you wouldn't be able to drive them anymore or better yet, they just might drive themselves. Other then Porsches, Japanese car is the natural path, or back to my roots. Used to play with them because they were affordable for poor bastards like me. |
Same here, my first cars were all Japanese because I was poor! After several pickups for my lawn mowing, I bought a 240SX and my dad had a 200SX (the 1980s RWD one). They convinced me of the joy of RWD and manual transmissions. Neither was fast but they were light, tossable, fun, and tough.

Ok, I was thinking about this “cheaper but still fun” thing for some time. This thread kind of catalyzed it. After months of research and looking, I found a 1985 GSL-SE an hour and half from me.
By all appearances it is in remarkably good shape, just a few issues I can find. Going to the dealer for a PPI, be what it may, and especially looking for hidden rust. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1512220123.jpg If all goes well, I'll do a quick summary of initial ownership in a couple of weeks. BTW, the SC goes nowhere. It is too much a member of the family to consider selling. :) |
^^Love the 1st gen RX-7s! A friend used to have one, it’s a car I’ve always admired. If I had the space I’d probably be looking for one myself - such lovey, clean lines. Good Luck!

I owned a GSL for years and had swapped an SE suspension and wheels onto it. Mine was a reliable and fun car but the engine had NO torque...which really limited its entertainment value. The 13B should be better than the 12A but I've never driven an SE. I sometimes wondered if there would be room for an LS but would rather see a turbo'd 13B (or a ported Cosmo 20B!!).
