Those German kids are good. Someone sent me a link of them on some other American classic 60's rock and roll music.

Too sharp and pitchy, at least on cheap computer speakers.

I bet they sound great live.

That cover was as bad as disco versions of Beethoven.

Its sugary fluff with no grit or soul.

No, they're not I'll agree also. But.. what they are is very good at doing these songs and hopefully giving access to these tunes to new generations.

I'm always playing historic footage of the classics to my two girls (8 and 11) in the hope they pick something up musically. The first question they ask is if the musician is dead or not. Most cases they are, and their interest rapidly tanks. These two are awesome for doing justice to a very productive period of music that shouldn't be forgotten. Great work!

Edit- having said that, I'm off to watch some Janis footage right now. That clip above made my hair stand on end. Just so, so good.

Great post, and I agree!. But having spent my whole life listening to the icons...I get bored pretty easily listening to these remakes...usually, they just don't do it "for me"... but I'm an old fart

Well I just did the experiment.
Played the girls and Mum (who reached her pinnacle of sonic appreciation right about when the Top Gun track was released..) three iconic Janis songs. They all quickly ignored it and started watching X Factor, claiming my music was too loud.
Then I played the MonaLisa Twins versions of the exact songs and they all shut up and started listening. Watched all three to the end. What's that all about?!

Matt, no one wants to hang or see the old farts. No matter how great Elvis is, I didn't care for his music. Hell, all the CSNs and Pink Floyd stuff I used to dislike back in high school (grew up in the mid 80s) but didn't like the new wave music of the time instead, I listen to regular rock and roll or heavy metal. Kids will gravitate toward their own age group, not a bunch of burned out hippies. I can relate to that. Here's another example, cars from the 50 or 60s don't do a thing for me. Not even so much from the 70s neither except for the 911s of that era.

God bless anyone who can make music. It shouldn't be a competition. These girls worked hard, and are probably more accomplished than most of their critics.

I can hear a few notes of any top 40 song from the 60s and tell you the artist and the year it was popular. Can't even name a song made in the last 20 years. I know some 80s songs because of my son, who always had his radio or MTV on. I think he was unintentionally doing Matt's experiment on me!

Edit:
Mrs WD pointed out that I DO like Feist, JEM, John Mayer, Wilco and other artists that are recent and still alive.

Let me guess, they then had authentic Italian food for lunch afterwards and were very happy about it.

It's all about what you are used to.

If you grew up eating SpaghettiO's out of a can or listening to Pop-Music in your informative years, then that's what your tummy and ears crave.

When my wife get's sick she craves SpaghettiO's, it's her comfort food.

That's where I'm coming from, not an indictment of your family.

I feel your pain.
