The one before that was my tractor which, as it turns out, just needed a safety switch adjusted. :o $250 for a little 12 volt makes the $3500 for a Chevy Volt's main battery seem, not so outrageous. |
its ridiculous that you need special diagnostic tools to install a battery in some modern cars. Of course the marketing dept puts a spin on it as a feature, its part of the planned obsolescence for our disposable society. I will say the automotive industry is doing a good job fixing their problem of cars lasting too long.

For the record I've owned both a BMW and Porsche with that feature and always replaced the battery myself and never had the dealer reset the computer for a new battery. Also never had issues after, 3y on the BMW, 1y and counting on the porsche...
I asked the porsche tech once and the comment was that our modern 911s are mini hybrids. They don't run the alternator when not needed to save friction and gas, and kick it on when engine braking, stuff like that, to minimize losses.... He told me the lack of battery registration would not significantly hurt my battery life span - not that anyone's done a comparative study of anything ! |
Just be glad you aren't a GM owner with dual climate zones in the front! I've helped several owners with a simple HVAC computer reset. Others reported having the actuators, and or whole a/c system replaced, which was not necessary, just because of the battery. Thousands down the drain!
