1956 Chevy pickup - tank vent gas vapor

Pal brought his truck over. Nicely restored.

Says it stinks in his garage like gas but no leaks. Since 56 is pre-charcoal cannister, I ask him about the vent. He said he did what other peeps had done and ran a short line of hose from the vent with a fuel filter in line and a piece of gauze wrapped around the end.

He said another pal with a similar vehicle ran the rubber hose to the front of the car with the same gizmos attached.

Believe he is running an electric fuel pump. Truck has a "modern" 350 in it now.

Is there a solution, assuming it is the tank venting causing the smell?

Stick the end of the vent hose in a can of oil. Or if he wants a truck that smells like a modern truck, have him get whatever the 350 came in and drive that.

A 1956 truck with a 350 SBC is not "restored." Its' fixed up, hot rodded, updated, effed up - take your pick - just not "Restored."

Restored vs "refurbished" criticism is the best you got? I would have gone to the Blue Flame Six forum.

I am not asking for your slant on terminology. I am asking for a solution.

I need help. Not a kick in the teeth.

Why not install a modern venting system?

I gave you two solutions. If it's "restored" it's going to smell like gasoline. It's part of the experience.

I used to have a '58 Ford F100. The gas tank was behind the bench seat. The perfume of old vinyl and gas fumes was part of the allure of driving an old truck. I dug it.

Am guessing there is a vent line on the gas tank somewhere. Run one line from the vent to one of these:

https://www.summitracing.com/parts/ado-215-153?seid=srese1&cm_mmc=pla-google-_-shopping-_-srese1-_-acdelco&gclid=Cj0KCQjwvOzOBRDGARIsAICjxofghIGrtbGsHnp_X748 MIomo0nJXk3d7gWgu0bIuBphKw40fQ08GIoaAmIBEALw_wcB

Run another line from the charcoal canister to the crankcase breather hose (or PCV line) to the air cleaner (carb).

Once that's in place, install a non-vented gas cap.

From the link fanaudical provided it seems like the correct approach without breaking the bank. His wife is fussing about the fumes from their attached garage.

Thanks

Sweet. That's what other forums are saying now that I am using a specific search query.

No attachment to engine vacuum port as any air leaks in the fuel system introduce an engine vacuum leak.

The gas cap filler on those is usually just behind the drivers door handle. On the outside. Is this one inside the cab now?

The OE tank uses a vented gas cap which is on the outside. No fuel or vapors are exposed to atmosphere but for the cap and then the carburetor.

There is no vent on the tank because it's on the inside of the cab

He had a tank installed back by the rear tire. It's not a fuel cell.

Owner just told me he found a genuine leak at the fuel pump. He asked me to pass on thanks to you guys. Much appreciated.
