Okay, I blew it. Most here probably too young to remember Gleason...
One funny aside posted on a pool site. Seems Gleason met Willie Mosconi through NY restaurant owner Toots Shore. Gleason was a hell of a skilled amateur player, loved playing for cash. Shore introduced Mosconi as a rich clothier who also liked to play for cash. Didn't take long for hustler Gleason to figure out he'd been hustled. He and Mosconi, arguably the greatest pool player who ever lived, were friends for life.

I don't know how anybody could not know Jackie Gleason. Granted his heyday was many, many years ago but he was very prolific and I would think it would be impossible to not have seen at least some of his work.
Often thought he must've been a very difficult person to be around. Probably lead a very interesting life and I thought the piece with Morley Schaffer was very well done. Thanks for posting it. |
