Did our first Trunk or Treat this weekend

I'm of a certain age............................... where kids would go out and knock on doors in a neighborhood close to them to trick or treat. As a matter of fact, when I was 9-10 years old my dad would drive me to a predetermined spot in the local small town ( think Mayberry ) meet with my friends and go knocking on doors dressed up in our favorite costume for @2 hours...........by ourselves.

Yes, he would leave me there as would other parents........................................alo oooooone......................................

I remember it was exciting, part adventure, part scary, part fun..........................it was a kid rite of passage..................

I guess things, people and times change.......possibly not for the better............. or maybe its for convenience and safety.

Anyway, our church hosts a fall festival which was this past Saturday afternoon. They had music, food, chili and bake cook-off, archery and trunk or treat / contest. It was a really great time with a lot of participation and families attending!

My wife won 1st place in the trunk or treat contest, I did not place in top 3 for the chili cook-off............. but strangely enough my crock pot was empty at the end while others had still half of more left in theirs..................................hmmmm.

The winning trunk!

We had one Saturday night, but I'm still on the hook for regular Trick or Treating on Tuesday as well. Good excuse to drink beer in the church parking lot.

Congrats on the win for your wife. Chili cookoffs can be tricky, generally what I like (mild with sausage and beans) isn't what other people like (HOT, and no beans). I guess go for the fun of it, not to win.

Thanks for sharing and trying to help the kids enjoy the holiday!

I'm one of the lucky ones who went door to door in our neighborhood dressed up in costume and had a big paper sack of goodies to enjoy afterwards plus a whole lot of adventure that evening - the likes of which cannot be duplicated with any other event or holiday.
It's shame things aren't the way they used to be.

We also host a Halloween / anniversary party on the actual day evening. Some of you may remember that we were married by "Elvis" in costume on that day. So its a double-good celebration!

We live in a somewhat rural area but still have a few families that will drive or walk to our house for their kids to trick or treat

Living in the country with a half mile between driveways traditional door to door just wont work. So local churches have Trunk or Treeats and our small town main street gets closed down and done up with local businesses and groups setting up booths/stations.

A far spaced driveway semi rural neighborhood here as well. Haven't had a kid ring the doorbell in years. Kinda sad.

Just in case, we buy a bag of candy. Not on my diabetic diet and Cindy won't eat it, so we usually give it to neighbors with children the next day.

When I was a kid, there was one old guy who would give you a dime.

Big money back then.

I remember the houses that would give out the full sized candy bars back in the day. Jackpot! One year there was an ice storm and Halloween was “cancelled”, I still went out with a friend and we totally raked in the candy.

Yeah, bonus points for the SRT GC. A guy drove an F458 to ours this year, I was rocking the Nissan Quest.

We live near a small town of 600 people (including the cemetery). Kids will be out trick or treating tonight by themselves, mine are only 7 and 4 so they will go with me and or mom for at least another year before we let them go on their own with their friends.

The Mayberry life still exists in small towns. People just prefer to live in small houses in big centers inches from their neighbors these days and worry about stuff.

The neat thing about our little town (Blackie, Alberta) is that it was the first place in North America where Trick or Treating took place... at least according to Wikipedia.

I just returned from Mayberry.. ( aka Mt. Airy NC )
my Lady wanted to show me the "Fall festival' she grew up with..
so the place does exist ..
Andy used to have a place behind my BIL house.
it's changed quite a bit since my last visit..
but old downtown still has that feel..
had lunch at the Snappy Lunch dinner which next door to Floyds barbershop..
SIL has a place in the Mountains which now has me looking for same..

We’re pretty remote. But there are kids around. We set up the front porch with giant spider skeletons and cobwebs and a bucket of spooky dry ice smoke. Had a bag of full size Hershey bars.

Didn’t get one trick or treater. They were all at ****ing trunk or treat. **** trunk or treat.

Speaking of Mayberry - Mr Airy / NC that is, we were traveling north from Atlanta after flying in and purchasing our 911. We figured to stop in that area , stay overnight and continue home the next day. We booked a room in the 'Mayberry' motel complete with an 'Aunt Bee's room and a replica Ford police car.

Since it was Sat night, we cruised down main st to the drive- in theater saw a movie. My only complaint was you couldn't buy liquor. Only beer /wine - which for me might as well be dry county.

Next day had breakfast in Gomer's place, got in the car headed out of town. Just before taking the Blue Ridge Parkway - we stopped by a flea market. 2 people asked what kind of sports car were we driving? They had never seen a Porsche..................this was in 2004.
