bought a grandfather clock- german
We bought a grandfather clock this weekend for $400. It was brought over from germany. The brand is SCHMECKEMBECHER.
It's in really nice shape. Only things I have seen wrong are the rod at the bottom of the pendulum is bent, now broken by me. It's used to set the speed of the clock. The metal was very soft, felt like pot metal. The other thing is the hammers for the hour chime hit between the rods, the 1/4 hour chimes work fine. I bent, adjusted, the hammers so they hit the chime now. All the. Wood looks to be solid wood, not lamented. Brass plating looks to be thin but all looks pretty good Not sure of the value but we did see another listed for 1200. Been reading up grandfather clocks bit still have questions. There is a lever inside that I can't tell what it does. It's hard to see but it looks like it can't really do anything.

Nice looking clock!
If the lever is near the hammer...it might be there to silence the chime...when wanted. I have a Howard Miller GF clock..not as nice as yours

i have seen the manuals for the howards.
no, it has a separate switch for that plus 3 different chimes. there is a post from the back of the face of the clock to another metal plate that has gears on it, it s just a spacer. but on the outside of that plate is a little nub that sticks up. when I move the lever down is locks into that nub. other than that there is just the pivot for the lever. that's the only 2 things I can see associated with the lever. it is hard to see though

I have one that looks almost exactly like that. I bought it new when I was stationed in Germany in the 80's. It has two switches. One allows you to chose either Westm. chimes, St Mich., Whitt. or silent and the other: silent (all the time), night off (no ring from 10PM to 7:15 AM), and strike (all night).

This is ours. Bought it from a shop in the Black Forest. Ordered it from a showroom and had it delivered to Frankfurt where we lived. You could get options ...for example, ours has engravings on the weights and pendulum. The glass shelves are perfect for hummel figurines that we also collected over there:

You mean you don't bolt them to the wall sideways like that?
I have a fairly large mantle clock that my grandfather made in the late 70's after he lost some of his faculties. The face is rotated so that the 9 is at the top. I have never changed it.
