Never thought about eating them - sounds interesting. For red meat, Caribou is fantastic. The Crane meat looks lean. Normally herbivores are tastier then carnivores or omnivores. Those Cranes eat small fish, snakes, frogs, and maybe insects? Do ducks and geese eat fish and frogs?

We have totally switched from ground beef/chuck to turkey for stuff like this. It simply has much more flavor.

Birds taste better?

Anyone else?
We use ground turkey for tacos... with a dash of Worcestershire and a pinch of paprika.

Sound like we are missing out on a major choice of good protein... I wonder if someone could buy some marshland and go out and harvest them to be sold in supper markets? Are they protected?

Wait, you can hunt Canadians? All the car tags here suddenly changed to Ontario and Quebec with very old horrible drivers at the wheel. I had no idea I could hunt them. This changes everything, most importantly my attitude and frustration.

Not sure if you are serious, Scott, but market hunting for migratory birds would require laws to be changed.

I know some of you look at these waterfowl and migratory birds as a pest, but numbers on a lot of birds were dwindling and threatened to completely die off. It is the federal and state as well as private organization programs such as Ducks Unlimited (all funded by hunters!) that brought back wetlands and habitat to re-establish migration routes.

Personally, I hunt a refuge in the SF bay that was bought by the feds from salt pond companies and converted to migratory wetlands. It is fantastic what comes into this area in the winter through the western migration route.

My bad I'm not a hunter so I claim ignorance.

It just seemed like the guys were posting a lot of pictures of them wandering around their yards/driveways and complaining as if the were a nuisance/over populated.

I know people raise Buffalo to sell the meat so I was wondering "we raise chicken/turkey/duck/quail for resale, why not crane?"

In Texas the farmers hate them as well.

I had a great bowl of Elk Chill last night. In fact I had seconds. Dang good stuff. Very different from cattle.

Depends on the type of duck, some only eat fish and frogs (mergansers). The sea ducks eat a lot of shellfish, and most diving ducks eat more protein than veggies. But as a general rule, puddle ducks eat more plant life than protein, so taste better. I've been told by many who have gotten to hunt them, swan actually tastes terrible.-WW

ps. Once upon a time I was a trophy waterfowl hunter.

The anti-market hunting laws apply to nuisance wild animals. It would be fine with most of the people here in SW Ohio if deer and Canada geese could be hunted and sold for a profit. I hope that law can be amended soon. It is a remnant of the days when deer and wild turkey were almost extinct in Ohio. Both populations have come back with a vengeance and need to be controlled.

My mallards are lazy. They eat the koi food and the cat food.

As far as bird hunting goes those cranes are one the more dangerous ones to hunt. They instinctively punch that beak into eyes.. Just eyes. Most crane hunters don't even use dogs, as a wounded crane can punch right through into the brain pan of a dog. People too but haven't heard of it. They're predators, and as such are smart and often cranky. -WW

Mallards are really lazy and have me trained well. Daisy starts squawking really loud when she's hungry and I'll give her more food. Donald on the other hand is pretty quiet.

Around here, you can see the Sand Hill Cranes walking down the freshly planted fields straight down the row..picking out the seeds. They can eat up the farmers profit quickly.
