I’ll just say it, the best meat!

This needs it own thread.

Sandhill Crane. People have nicknamed it, “RIBEYE OF THE SKY”. I think it is BETTER than ribeye. It is similar to the best cut of beef, but the texture is superior, and the flavor is milder. I’ve never eaten veal; maybe it’s like veal. I am struck dumb by how good it is. Word gets out, that bird will go extinct. :)

Where my mom lives in FL, they just wander around the neighborhood.

vash 11-08-2017 06:11 PM

Working out the math it's about $400 per pound. :D

Cooked very rare.
And lovingly packaged the rest for the deep-freeze, and the long trip home.

no shortage of sand hill cranes in southern Colorado!

I'm sure there is a corollary here that someone can elaborate on: have any of you tried ground turkey for making hamburgers, chili, and other things you'd normally use ground beef for?

We have totally switched from ground beef/chuck to turkey for stuff like this. It simply has much more flavor.

Birds taste better?

Anyone else?

Please pardon my ignorance. but I thought you had to cook all birds well done.

aigel 11-08-2017 08:19 PM

No, wild birds can be underdone, no problem. They don't live in a sty with 100000 other ones crapping themselves. The risk with factory birds is salmonella.

I eat my wild birds medium but make sure there isn't shot going through it, possibly contaminating the piece of meat. Just like you see here, clean breast.

I have never eaten crane. I bet it is great. I love Canada Geese, we call it "steak from the sky" here too. Hard to beat.

well i'll be darned. that is really crazy!

heel n toe we've used ground turkey instead of beef for years. much better tacos but you have to be careful not to dry it out. almost have no use for ground beef now.

I got a serious "learning experience" from a Canadian friend when I mentioned "Canadian geese."

We have a pair that roam our neighborhood. It's fun. They can be loud when they want to be.

'Ribeye of the sky?' House recommends sandhill crane hunt in Michigan

Beloved by bird-watchers — and perhaps less so by farmers — the sandhill crane may be a step closer to becoming a hunted bird species in Michigan.

The state House of Representatives, in a voice vote and without debate, on Wednesday passed a resolution urging the state Natural Resources Commission to establish a sandhill crane hunting season in Michigan...............................

“While we recognize that Sandhill Cranes inflict crop damage, an open hunting season is not the solution,” Michigan Audubon executive director Heather Good said in a statement.

“Opening a fall season to hunt sandhill cranes won’t address farmers’ concerns — a localized, site-specific issue — in the spring. Recently-seeded corn fields are an attractive food source for cranes, and broadly reducing the population does not change that. Newly developed, non-toxic chemical seed coatings have the potential to redirect Sandhill Cranes to consume insect pests in corn fields and avoid the seed, resulting in a win-win for farmers.”

The state Natural Resources Commission has not scheduled any action to consider establishing a sandhill crane hunt, but “the DNR continues to monitor sandhill crane populations in Michigan and to provide information to the commission regarding the species,” DNR spokesman Edward Golder said Wednesday.
Corn fed Crane.................

I was wondering how he thought it wise to brag about killing a citizen of Canada on a public forum!

not to mention the grossness of eating one. ;)

vash 11-09-2017 06:12 AM

I think modern agriculture changed the crane. There are billions of them. Before agriculture I don't think the numbers were there. The huge food choices changed migration patterns and help the population grow.

In Texas the farmers hate them as well.

I know you are talking about Canada geese. Did you shoot it? Around here you can run over all you can eat with your car. For a couple of decades, new housing developments have a water feature (pond) as part of their fire protection program. There are geese (and goose poop) in the streets all around them.

Porchdog 11-09-2017 08:03 AM

I started hunting geese a couple years ago from the "company goose blind" in the field behind my office. I believe the top count from that blind was over 600 birds in a season. (It's not unusual for a group of 5 to limit out in the morning then another group to do the same in the afternoon. )

I think the goose breast is fantastic meat. Some of the guys who hunt don't even want them.

The canadas and snow geese are pests many places around here.

I never heard of hunting cranes.
