Why do the tops of my feet hurt?
Been dealing with this for a few months now. Seems a few hours into every day the top or right foot starts hurting. Like a sharp pain. I switched to Nikes with a super soft tounge and use elastic laces so they aren’t getting much pressure. Doesn’t seem to matter if I am just sitting at my desk or walking a ton.
I’ve given up completely on cowboy boots. They are almost immediate pain. Any ideas? I could go to wearing flip flops every day I suppose. ![]() |

Are you getting wrinkles in your socks because the tops of the shoes are too lose. Sometimes the toebox of a shoe or boot can push your socks back where the bunch up on the top of your foot. Had one pair of shoe that looked and felt great, but made a sore across the second row of laces. My pediatrist is the was because of the last. It was just tight where it was causing the sore.
Go to a pediatrist and he can recommend a shoe for your foot shape, or a good custom shoe place. Mine was able to get mine on a presecription so my insurance pays for 1 pair of shoes a year.

How far down your foot do the shoes lace? If they are like most tennis or running shoe or like hiking boots with laces that go to the ball of your foot, make sure the lower part is laced tightly so all the the tightness is not across the top of your foot where they tie.
Also if the shoes have what looks like an extra hole at the top they is too far to lace comfortably... run the lace from the same side into that hole making a loop across the last two holes on top, then cross the laces one more time going thru the loop. They when you tie the shoes it does two things. It kind of locks the laces, and it keeps your for from sliding front to back in your shoe. I have some dress type redwings and the laces completely bring the leather together from top to bottom. Thee is no way for the bottom to loosen and be to tight across the top of my foot. I also have some moccasin type shoes with only like 4 lace holes near the top. I have to tie those kind of loose, then make the knot itself very tight so it doesn't work loose or it will start pinching the tops of my feet. It doesn't help to wear thicker socks either. Getting a good fit is very very important. Not just length and width but how tall the room in the shoe is. It's about the last they are made on. When I first got custom shoes my pediatrist made me take them back. Instead of trying to fit my foot correctly they custom shoe place just fit me with some that the top of the toe box to the end of the tongue was stretchy. Went to another shoe place and the lady measured my foot all different ways then showed me some shoe to pick from that would work for me. I am on my 2nd pair. She was the one that taught me what to do with the extra lacing holes at the top of the shoe. Learned a LOT about shoes after I stepped on that nail and had to get custom shoes. funny that some of my old shoes fit and wear fine as long as they are laced properly. If you can't figure out the extra holes lacing thing, maybe I can send you a pic.

I had similar symptoms as you describe in my one foot. I had fractured a metatarsal in that foot in high school. I went to see a podiatrist, who ran some x-rays, and determined that I had pre-arthritis in that foot. They made a pair of orthotic inserts for my shoes and all is well now.

You probably have an osseous prominence on the top of your foot. Normally, the laces cross over the top of your foot and sort of make a series of "X"s where they cross. Feel for the tender area, and rather than having them cross, go one hole where the laces are parallel to the opening at the top of the shoe. If this is unclear, I can post a pic to illustrate.
Richard, to keep it looser by the toes, get them the way you want them, tie a knot a few holes from the toe of the shoe, lace the rest normally. That way, you can get the top tight without crowding your toes.
