Ram VP 44 and lift pumps

1999 Ram 3500
Indecision is the key to flexibility, and I have been vacillating as to what to do with this POS system.
For a long time.
Lift pumps, injection pumps, yadeda
So -
My thought is to bolt on the old mechanical style lift pump.
https://www.ebay.com/i/162633667069?chn=ps&dispctrl=1

I have understood my cam should still have the lump to run it.
(I will have to check)
Now to the point, - Should there be an accumulator between it and the VP to keep the pressure somewhat constant?
If so which one?
At low idle, I would think the volume would get a bet spiky?
Would it be a problem compared to the electric lift pump?
thanx!

I'm not sure I understand the problem you're having. Please explain

I am trying to get rid of the electric pump.
At 100 bucks to 1000 bucks, depending on what one chooses, it becomes ridiculous.
I know there is some belt driven ones ...I think they even require an electric pump to start.
B4 the VP 44 POS came along, the P pumps used the mechanical lift type.
They are pretty much foolproof.
I want it instead of the guaranteed to fail electric type.

None of them work very well.
Plus they are 400 bucks to over a Grand for more electric crap.
Personally, I don't think they are worth it.
The mechanical pumps have worked forever with no problems.
I want to simply, not pay more for more complications.

They do have a calling for the 5.9's. Maybe you have dealt with original generations?
They come with a fuel water filter, and low micron filter...

What are your current issues, have you ran in the past?

I am going mechanical.
I just need to figure out a buffer so the pulsations become even.

afterburn 549 any idea what fuel pressure you need to regulate to ? I agree with you on the mechanical pump vs. electric . My 2001 Duramax has a mechanical pump and I'm at 164,000 miles and counting . Anyway back to your scenario , do you know for a fact the mechanical fuel pump on the older Cummins has a pressure regulator ? Is it possible it runs direct pressure from the pump ? Wish I could be more help .

The VP 44 only needs about 10 Lbs operate correctly.
They do not operate well over 20 or so.
I forget the reasons but hard starting and a few other bad things occur
The mechanical is good for at least 20 lbs and more, which is plenty.
The P Pumps have a pressure relief valve of sorts and do not mind the pulsations.
My concern is the pulsations at lower RPM and pressure on the VP 44.
The pressure needs to be held in check as well as the pulsations because the cam bump runs the mechanical pump.
It may not be as big a deal as I think it is...but I want to get totally ready when I do this conversion.
Who knows I may retrograde to a P Pump in the end.
