Anyone have 1980s Suzuki 1000 sport bike experience?

Would love a parts source and other advice.

I have a 1982 Katana 1000. What are you looking for? Parts are hard to come by from Suzuki. Ebay is the best source.

I purchased the 1000S from Lake Cle Elum....it has been sitting for a bit. Last registered in 93. While running, it has a lot of deferred maintenance. Brakes, tires, chain, fork seals, carb work etc. That is being taken care of as I type.....

It still has the stock exhaust. Wondering if a header system is worth while or simply doing a free flow slip on muffler like the the Dunstall style I have seen around since I was a teeny bopper.

I know re-jetting will be need with a 4-1 and the exhaust volume will increase..... stock is 92HP......so, any been there done that experience?

I owned the same model back in the early 80s and it had a Vance and Hines.

At the higher attitude, which enriches your carbs, you might be fine without rejetting when adding an exhaust. Put in new plugs, ride it for a few days, then check the color of the plugs.

Exhausts will add good power to these motors, but as you know, make them much louder. I prefer stock these days, but to each his own.

A LOT of guys use these motors for drag racing, so you might be able to glean some useful info if you find a BBS.

And make sure you put only non-ethanol fuel in the bike.

JB - While a 4 into one with proper jetting and air cleaners will give you a bump in HP, you hurt the value as it sits now. They only made 700 GS 1000S in 1979 and another 700 in 1980....That 1980 exhaust you have is a one year only. The '79 S shared the exhaust of a four year run of GS100C, GS100E, of which there were tens of thousands produced.......

Run it how you want, but hang onto that exhaust........

This was my big Suzuki. After riding Ducati's before I bought this I ended up hating it and sold it on. It might have been my particular bike but it lacked that grunt that a big twin had and I would have to shift down a couple of gears to get it to move its considerable fat ass. Footpegs were too far forward and it steered very slowly. Looked great though. In the context of 1982 I suppose it was OK but the world really moved on when the VF750F came out then the 900 Ninja and finally the Gixxer. Ride it like its 1982 and you should have fun.

The Katana was a unique design. Looked good but not a good low speed ride. Had maneuverability issues.

Cool Cooley, my buddy has one that's mint. Actually had Wes at his house this summer and he signed the gas tank.

I've had many GS1100's, including three Katana 1100's (we didn't get the 1000 in Canada), one of which is on my workbench right now. It's modified, 1260cc, Gixxer/Bandit suspension, etc.

I've been searching for 4 original OEM turn signals for years now, without any luck. Any idea if these forums might help?

I'm sure there will be someone on GS Resources that will have a stash. It's the #1 forum for GS owners worldwide.

Richard Motion: I should have some spare turns signals for a '79 GS1000S....The 1980 signals were different (square)......

Wes Cooley now lives in Twin Falls, ID.....I spent the night there taking this bike down to JB. I looked up his address and it was only a 1/2 mile from my hotel.

I almost ran over Cooley on a race track in the early '80's......He was in Seattle area for a race, it was open practice, so were were all on the track at once. In the rain. He went down right in front of me....He's sliding on his butt and I'm as hard on the brakes as I can be in the rain.....

I only sold this 1980 as I still have a 1979 that is more of a project and didn't see the point of having 2 I didn't ride?

Pic - Leaving to meet JB:

The first motorcycle I ever rode was a GS1100..... Unfortunately, The first motorcycle I ever crashed was that same GS1100 on that same ride.....That was 36 years ago. Bike belonged to my best friend. The bike is long gone. But we are still best friends and we both still have the motorcycle sickness. In fact we just did 2 track days this past weekend. That GS1100 was a neat piece.
