Egg nog
As a child I cherished the holiday season as it meant egg nog was available in the stores. I loved that stuff as a kid, young adult, adult, and middle aged person. Now that I'm in my 50s, I still like it. However, my sister bought some for me at Thanksgiving and it just wasn't the same. To me it really didn't have much taste, and was a little watery. It was from the same dairy that made it all these years. They didn't have the better, thicker version that i always had to thin out with milk. Just this watery one. Last year I also had the eggnog latte from Starbucks, it was meh.
What are your feelings about egg nog? |
i like the truncated soy version. the full octane version is just too cloyingly sweet, and rich..really too rich.
|
Used to drink it with whiskey at Christmas....Then, 25 yrs ago, I checked out the calories and haven't touched it since..........Very good though...
|
Commercial egg nog is nothing more than ice cream base that hasn't been frozen. The good stuff anyway. The bad stuff is basically flavored milk.
|
I like egg nog with rum. Excellent drink. I add extra nutmeg. Great at Xmas.
Thanks for the reminder! |
I still love it as well, but just cant drink more than 1 small glass at a time now, unlike when i was a kid who could down the whole quart in one sitting..
|
Was always served egg nog in small glasses. Just kinda kept to it as I thought that is how you were supposed to enjoy it. Get mine at a local dairy/burger joint, Braums. Still the good thick stuff.

It is super easy to make. Dairy product (anything from heavy cream to plain milk depending on how thick you want it to be) Eggs Sugar Vanilla Cinnamon and clove sprinkle. I used to do rum but found whisky gives it a nice bite. |
Like most things, once you have homemade you'll never like the prepared stuff. Anything I can find in the grocery store is usually way too thick and sweet.
Follow the Martha Stewart recipe (which I'm sure she stole it/traditional but using her name it is easy to find online). It is great tasting and high octane. Eggnog is not something to drink by the quart, or even a 10 ounce glass. 6oz would be an appropriate serving. • 12 large eggs, separated • 1 1/2 cups superfine sugar • 1 quart whole milk • 1 1/2 quarts heavy cream • 3 cups bourbon • 1/2 cup dark rum • 2 cups cognac • Freshly grated nutmeg In a very large bowl, beat egg yolks until thick and pale yellow. Gradually add sugar to yolks. With a wire whisk, beat in milk and 1 quart cream. Add bourbon, rum, and cognac, stirring constantly. Just before serving, beat egg whites until stiff. Fold into mixture. Whip remaining heavy cream until stiff and fold in. Sprinkle with nutmeg. |
Several years ago, we watched an episode of Good Eats with Alton Brown. He has 2 recipes. One of the recipes is traditional and another is for folks that are scared of uncooked stuff. We tried the traditional and it's freakin' awesome. I haven't liked the stuff since I was little, but I can't get enough of this stuff when the missus makes it.
I believe the recipe below is the same, but ours is all bourbon, not half rum, half bourbon. Alton Brown's Eggnog Recipe | Devour | Cooking Channel Quote:

Guilty pleasure, the son likes it, the wife and daughters don't. Limit myself to buying 1 pint/year.

I love that stuff. As a wiry teenager in H.S. I worked four nights a week loading diesel truck trailers with milk & milk products - usually 4 to 5 thousand cases of half gallons & quarts, plus the other stuff. When the holidays were approaching the dairy would stock egg nog. I'd drink two pints a night. When the egg nog wasn't available, I'd drink half of a pint carton of chocolate milk & refill it with heavy cream. I don't know what that would do to me now days.

love it, with brandy in it and nutmeg on top.
And quality has definitely gone downhill since we were kids. With any luck hipsters in Brooklyn will craft brew some quality eggnog. Going out tonight, may stop and see what's what at Whole Foods. |
Love it. Grew up drinking local dairy egg nog with rum Also mince meat pie. Mince meat back then was the scrapings from a hog's head with raisins and dried apples. Gotta try that again someday.

If you see this eggnog in the store, DON'T get it. Has a very high fat content and good ingredients but is thin and not much flavor. Very disappointing.

Thanks for the cool recipes. Good excuse for a party to try that big batch.

I love egg nog. Have not had it in 25+ years though. I also love my wife's berry cobbler. I would eat one small helping and rest would go in the trash. I just need a taste...wife does not make it for me anymore. I suck.
|
Used to make it at home as a kid.. Some whole milk, raw egg, and some sugar blended, yum.
Not any more of course. |
I remember the adults drinking eggnog at Christmas time when I was a kid. I guess it had booze in it, since booze was a big part of the holiday season then. I do recall tasting it and not wanting more. Likely was sweet and that has never been my thing. Don't screw up my coffee with sugar and don't screw up my bourbon with Coke.:D:D
