For anyone planning to relocate and purchase property which is the largest gamble for many of us, other factors to be researched might be: Water, federal land ownership, pollution, weather and susceptibility, insurance structures, changing demographics, existing state debt obligations, taxation rates(there is no free lunch remember), existing infrastructure, federal state representation, health care costs and resources and options, same thing with education, existing jobs and potential for jobs growth, and any other factors for your specific lifestyle.
Everything is a trade off and there is a seat for every butt.

What is funny is the angst this chart seems to create, yet when you click the "personal freedom tab" Texas is 49 of 50.

I poked around it a bit, seems I live in a nice middle road of nearly everything area.

The beauty of living within a few miles of a state border, is I get to experience the advantages of their different governments.

Each state is founded as a sovereign country that has yeilded particular jurisdiction to a federal government. We refer to this as one nation, but it is 50 manifold governments working together.

It is a great thing that no one state's rules govern all, and we get to move quite easily to the one that suits us best.

Because I'm not trying to bring P or R into it. Click in deep enough, and you can play with teh values for what YOU define as freedom. Thinking of moving or where to go to college (or send your kids/grandkids/etc)? I didn't get down into landlord/tenant stuff but there are references to property laws, taxes, etc. that would be helpful for those asking about where to buy investment real estate, etc.

Some of us can appreciate a tool and talk about things without dragging it down to left vs right and poop flinging like a bunch of monkeys.
