Super Moon

In upstate NY tonight. The super moon really was spectacular. Sorry, no pics. Too tired from driving to do anything but look and appreciate.

It's just now starting to come up over the wall in the back yard out west here.

The park around the corner from me normally has a sand beach. This morning walked the dog up there and the high tide was so high it covered the whole spit. Only some spartina grass visible. All due to super moon.

Got up and got on the road at 5 this morning and got a double dose. Watched the Super moon for a couple of hours as we drove west, listening to a John Grisham book. Nice morning.

This is one of the few I've seen that capture the sense of size. Is this P&S or did you set up the shot manually?

Cajundaddy 12-05-2017 08:28 PM

flatbutt, do you mean just point and shoot? No, camera on a tripod with 300mm lens. I bracketed exposures as the moon rose, some show a lot more detail on the moon but lost the clouds. I thought the clouds were the best part so this was my favorite even though the moon is a bit overexposed. Some guys will shoot HDR to capture ALL of the dynamic range and then spend a dozen hours post processing but I sorta like to keep it simple.

yep meant point and shoot. Do you remember the range of your f-stops and the shutter speed?

This one was 1600 ISO, 300mm, f/5.6, 1/8 sec. Camera: Oly EM10MkII

I bracketed shutter speed from 1/2 sec to 1/60 and this was my favorite. Lots of atmospheric haze, thermals, and cloud bands made it look gritty.

Bad Moon Rising.

With the moon at 300mm you can get some blur due to motion at anything over 1/60. I'd be more likely to bracket aperture or ISO or increase ISO and then keep 1/60 as the max shutter speed.

It does always suck when you're trying to get something like the moon with some landscape in the foreground, or clouds like your photo, or other stars. It's essentially impossible to get decent detail on the moon AND those other much dimmer items.

It all depends on the subject of your shoot I suppose. Here is another one I took a while ago. Waxing crescent, high in a clear sky with plenty of light to work with. This was 1250mm, f/14, ISO 400, 1/10 sec. I took a series of time lapse shots and this was the pick of the litter. Not perfect, but not bad for $130 lens.
