any Allison transmission experts on here ?
Background: 2001 GMC diesel dually 4X4 purchased used with 100K on the clock now has 165K . I have not changed the transmission fluid or filter since I purchased but it was changed by the dealer when I purchased it . Been reliable as a stove with no issues .
A few months ago it developed a random shifting quirk on 1-2 + 2-1 shifts that would be a little harsh . It was/is totally random and sometimes does it and sometimes doesn't . Does not seem to be temperature related as it sometimes does it cold and sometimes hot . And most of the time not at all . So a few weeks ago I drained the transmission pan and replaced with DEX fluid and a new spin on filter . The old fluid that came out was red in color not brown or black . Smelled great with no hint of burning . With the new fluid/filter it acts the same way . I know I only replaced about 50 % of the fluid capacity but am planning another drain/filter/refill within 5,000 miles or so . This is the 5 speed Allison and I have read online there are new GM flash software updates , does this sound like a software type of issue ? It almost feels like a solenoid timing is off or is partially hanging up . I know these transmissions like Transynd fluid but I was holding off spending on that fluid to make sure I'm not losing the transmission . All other shifts are perfectly smooth . The tow/haul portion seems to work just fine with all shifts being crisper and holding RPM longer as it should . So what is my next step in diagnosis ? I have no check engine lights but I guess I can plug in my OBD reader and see if anything comes up .

I am not but thought I might warn you ahead of time I've picked up viruses from GM truck forums. Surf carefully.

Try resetting Transmission Control Module.
Google for your year / make but generally involves not much beyond disconnecting it's hot lead for a few minutes.

04, duramax, 5 speed allison. I get the same thing sometimes. I have been running a tuner, and recently starting driving it stock again, and it does it much less frequently and severe, but I still noticed a hard 1-2 upshift last weekend.
Ill look, and see if there is a bulletin, or software update later today for you. I was going to look in to it myself anyhow. Pretty minor on my truck anyhow, and I baby the thing so I have always sort of thought of it as more of a nuisance, than a problem. My filters are clean, fluid new, as well. Started rearing its face right about 150k. Trans is flawless in every other way.
