Those stupid autonomous cars...

We've got a fleet of EV-Bolts in SFO apparently authorized to drive around "autonomously", or more like "learning to drive" apparently... I really wish that fleet would stay the #$$% off the roads at commute hours...

A month or so ago we witnessed one just do emergency stops mid intersection and almost get rear-ended twice, no apparent reason, no pedestrians, nothing.. just drops anchors with no-one around. The guy behind was not pleased, and it did it again at the next intersection !

Today I am following one in traffic (other lane, I'm not crazy), and it just stops in a traffic jam and refuses to go when the lane moves... People flow around it and that caused at least 3 near misses I saw from my vantage point...

I get away from it, but the stupid thing catches up with me, and starts drifting into my lane like I'm not here.. It must have changed its feeble mind maybe 2" from my door when the chaperon yanked the wheel or something. WTF ? Are we rushing this maybe ?

I get that they need testing, I wish it weren't at my expense or at rush hour... Not ready... I know there's someone on this board that works on those, I'm sure it's hard tech to get right and probably quite interesting, but FYI, it's NOT right yet, not by a long shot... Those things are a menace...

Why are we consciously letting the robots destroy our rights?

I suspect this thread will be alive and well even when they are functioning as intended.

I worked on that project. Those cars are extremely complicated. I can't divulge the content, but it is over the top technology. I am sure it will take some time to get it right.

Take a Tesla and multiply by about 20x, but I have no doubt it will be very good in the end.

Robotics and cars? It's all good.

Interesting.

Subjective surely, just talking, but the "over the top" technology you mention...... How long before it becomes the norm technology? Five years?

Is it all proprietary tech?

I searched and see news that GM is working on bringing similar test mules to NYC. Will be interested to see how the self driving cars deal with the anarchy on NYC streets.

Just saw that in CA, autonomous cars can’t recognize fire and attempt to take their occupants straight into it. No naps for you Cali commuters in these!

I do not disbelieve in anything. I start from the premise that everything is true until proved false. Everything is possible.

No foolin'. I forget where I read it, but it was said that in driving in NYC traffic you could do anything that you wanted to, as long as you didn't cause an accident.

Or roads covered with a few inches of snow and ice.

I commute to midtown daily on a motorcycle. NYC streets are lawless. Respect for laws on NYC streets = you're not getting to your destination anytime soon. Watch the transit bus drivers to learn what you can get away with. Not sure how driverless car software is going to handle it. I suspect it won't which means they will be rolling roadblocks here.
