Need a new one. Is there anything new in microwaves these days I should look for?

I have had a several, there is very little difference between brands in my mind. My favorite is a garage sale find, I think it's an LG. It was $20 five years ago.

I would not spend a great deal on microwave. Auto-reheat, a timer, and a defrost mode are all I need/use.

Don't touch the Magnetron! it's radioactive:)

GF who is much, much older than me still uses her Amana every day that she got in college and that was 40 years ago. It's so powerful the food sticks to my fillings. It has magnets!

She's much much older than me. Did I mention that?

I'm living without a microwave, replaced it with a toaster oven.

Pre-heating milk for tea/coffee with a sauce pan is much better than using a microwave, but the pans do pile up quicker.

Only thing I miss is using the timer on the old microwave but I'll get around to getting a cheap timer eventually.

Screw it, just build one like you do with everything else.

When I was looking I read that -most microwaves are actually made by sharp. Not sure if it’s true or not.

Usually its the door sensors(5$ for 2) or the door handle sensor or the plastic actuator ...all of this is caused be slamming the door. If buying a new one make sure to pay attention to the button panel EG: pattern and ease of touch...

My over-the-range Amana went out a few weeks ago...9 years old...Repair guy sez best to replace. Got a 1.7 cu ft LG at Home Depot for $148 on a Black Friday thing.......

Only concern was: Front mounting screws that come vertical thru the shelf. One was placed differently so it barely worked. I suggest you measure those carefully.

My Amana felt more solid than this LG......Works fine and couldn't beat the price.

You are really that old?

I lost count in my youth after the 7th or 8th dimension was new.
And that was back in the 80's.

Do you have a smart phone? Most have a timer app, or you can download one.

Got the same brand as the stove it goes over so it all looks matchy matchy. Don't use it much though. Tend to use the toaster oven. Even got cheap aluminum foil pans to cook things in with the toaster oven. They seem to wash just fine in the dishwasher.

Really like getting frozen dinner rolls and cooking them in the toaster for sandwiches and burgers. Fresh bread!

150o watt toaster oven is a lot cheaper than using the 3500 watt oven. And is faster than warming things on the 1500 watt stove top burner.

They are so much more efficient.

Why are microwave ovens still 1-speed?

I do think you can change the power output on the more expensive models.

Crowbob's GF's microwave was probably an expensive model. Like a high end Betamax video player. Probably built like the Space Shuttle.

It will never die.

All of them change the power, that's been my secret to excellent reheating for years now. Turn the power level down and add a minute or 2. Everything turns out so much better, more evenly heated/reheated, none of the popping and hissing and explosions.

I usually use power setting 7 but have gone down to 5 when reheating a steak if I don't have time to put it in the oven. The key is heating at full power for 30 seconds after that.

Microwave with inverter technology... what is inverter?
Answer: As I understand it, it's a device that regulates the output power of an incoming electrical current. It allows the Panasonic 'Genius' to lower the level of the microwave's output, in spite of the consistent level (more or less) of the current it's running on. This allows it to apply a continuous microwave 'signal' to your food at a lower level than full power. Standard microwaves simply output a high level of microwave energy and turn themselves on and off to effect a less than full 'power level.' That's pretty crude compared to what Panasonic does. Edit: Shaun, screw the micro, make it up in quantity. You could probably cook a dozen birds or a whole side of beef in the oven you built.
