Moved to Charleston

Just moved to Mt. Pleasant / Charleston, SC area and hoping Pelicans in the area can recommend a good independent shop for my '84 911. Also, any Cars & Coffee or other regular weekend events you can recommend.

I’m in Columbia SC, about 2 hours west of Charleston. There is a very well attended cars and coffee in Greenville SC (upstate, 3-4 hours from Chucktown) - not to say there isn’t one in Charleston, but I’ve not been to one. We have a monthly cars and coffee in Columbia that is mostly Mopar and younger, but they love the older Porsche’s. There are a few events in Charlotte (cars and coffee, cars and cappuccino).

You will find a few indies in town, as well as in Columbia and in Charlotte, NC. Docs garage in Columbia has been highly recommended (I do all of my own maintenance, and have not been there). For performance work I can recommend Black Forest Racing in Denver, NC.

You will need to schedule some time for the Blueridge Parkway in the Smokies, and of course the Tail of the Dragon. You will have to drive further to find some of this stuff, than you might in CA, but it’s out there and the trip can be half the fun.

I'll be moving to Charleston in June, 2018. Looks like we'll have enough of us around to form some sort of network for info sharing and DIY support. I will have a scissor lift, too.

You folks moving to Charleston are in luck, as that is the location of Autometrics. Anything I can't fix on my 911, they can.

Altadena

Good luck with your move SCforme,

I'm an Altadena transplant down in South Florida (Delray Beach). I'm in Charleston, Greenville and Columbia regularly on business albeit without the P-Car.

I'm jonsing to get into the Blue Ridge and tail, severely miss Angeles Crest, Mulholland, PCH, Malibu and Topanga Canyons.

Never occurred to me that flat Florida would be so boring!

You'll be shocked at how few old 911's you'll see as compared to So. Cal.

Let us know how the move goes? Scott SmileWavy

I can't think about Charleston without drooling and dreaming about my next meal at Husk. I've been told by people that follow food like I follow cars and motorcycles, that in the last 5 years Charleston SC has become one of the top food cities in the world.
Just saying, loosen the belt a notch or two and check that out!

Re: the Blue Ridge Parkway - I grew up with it in my backyard and use to drive it almost daily. I miss the heck out of it!

I am from Charleston, so your best bet is Autometrics....I have gotten all my Porsche's, 67, 69 and now 85 serviced there....you can PM for another shop that does some work for me and I will give you the details.

Charleston Cars and Coffee meets every Saturday 0830-? in Mt Pleasant at Town Centre, because it's the Holidays, space is always limited but they do have a variety of assortment of all types of vehicles----Kiawah has theirs 3rd Saturday each month located in Fresh fields village. As for Charleston CC, I have attended but they do draw some newer cars and tend to be the same after you have attended a few times. Check it out and it might be your new happy place.

HA! We're moving there too, as soon as my wife retires Nov 2019. Likely Dunes West, close to Mt Pleasant. It's a California exodus! SmileWavy

Charleston is on my "to look at list" for my next move.

Ok, I can't speak to a shop but we are down in Charleston once a month or so just to have dinner. For a great Duck Club with duck fat fries: Tattooed Moose. Mmm. Makes my mouth water.

Seriously, you can eat almost anywhere downtown and have a great meal.

T77911S 12-08-2017 09:21 AM

you want the dining list, ask TIMC.

awesome steak, downtown. I think it is called 224. aged meat, the steak alone was about
$50 10yrs ago.

good BBQ sandwich, hyw 17 bessingers bbq. for Porschegal it is like melvins in Columbia but better. melvins was a spinoff from bessingers.

I had an excellent experience at Graze restaurant in Mt. Pleasant and would recommend it

If you want to eat dinner at Husk in the next two months or so - better call and get your reservation now. Seriously.

Kids got us a gift card for our Christmas present last year as we were leaving to spend a few days for our Anniversary (Dec 29) in Charleston. First thing we did was go by Husk to see what might be available. Got there mid afternoon first day - it was a Mon or Tues. The first opening for lunch was Thr of the next week!
