How do I identify a resistor ?

Fried a resistor in a gas gauge. It is orange with the black end, and seems to hae an 04 on it and an I T something under that. It's fried. I would take this to Radio Shack to match up, but those days are gone.

Any help would be appreciated. It seems a shame to waste an otherwise good gauge.

It would seem this is more likely a diode than a resistor. Pic would help as others have requested.

My money's on cap. 104 = .1 uF, black end is polarity..... ;)

Best picture I can muster.

Hendog 12-10-2017 12:32 PM

That’s a diode.

Yes... Glass diode!

Easy fix.

IT?

It rolls around like that.

dad911 12-10-2017 12:58 PM

Yup, I lose.

physically broken?

1N4004 is popular diode. (is it N instead of k?)

Yep, it blew up from a full reverse polarity episode. Shattered the glass.

2.29 on Ebay. Thanks guys.

dad911 12-10-2017 01:30 PM

I just checked my junk drawer. Sorry don't have any.

10 for $5 on amazon prime.

MBAtarga 12-10-2017 02:47 PM

Just took a look. Found one in my spare parts bin - used, but it checks out okay with my meter. Send me a PM with your address and it can be on its way tmr if you want it.

Thanks Mark, I already ordered a few. Now I just have to be patient.

Do I need to use a heat sink on the wires while soldering ?

RKDinOKC 12-10-2017 06:46 PM

When I usually have a burnt up resistor it burns off the stripes and I have to find it on the schematics to see what the heck it was.

That does look more like a diode than a resistor though.

ledhedsymbols 12-10-2017 07:19 PM

Solder carefully, they don't stand up well to excess heat. Use the bare minimum of time with the iron on the component, and use a heat sink.

dad911 12-10-2017 08:09 PM

Needle nose pliers with a rubber band to keep it shut will soak the heat. Between the solder joint and the diode.

Solder pencil, not a gun. ;)

Do you mean the "Nerd Perks" card?

Have you ever noticed the colored stripes on a resistor? On the left of the card it shows the resistor color codes.

This may be more helpful.

I have seen the stripes. It did not help for me that the diode was orange with black ''stripes''. It has been 45 years since I messed with any of that stuff. I assembled a Heathkit stereo, and that was about it. This is a big help for me, and I appreciate it.

Thanks, Guys.

Bad boys rape our young girls, but violet goes willingly

The only thing you have to remember is "black brown" at the start.

red-beard 12-11-2017 04:28 AM

The old GE MK IV control systems had a 4-20mA input section and the fuse was rated too high (0.5 amps). If you applied 24VDC to the circuit, the resister would blow, saving the fuse. I kept lots of the the correct resistors around. I would go to an electronics store, go to the precision bin and then use a meter to check and find the ones that were PRECISELY 250 ohms. These were 1/4 Watt resistors.

I'd assign an electrical tech and a few minutes later, everything was working.

MBAtarga 12-11-2017 08:39 AM

Alligator clips can be used as a heat sink as well. As close to the soldering location as possible decreases the amount of heat hitting the component.

fintstone 12-11-2017 11:30 AM

On an automotive gas gauge, a 12v 1N4742A 1W zener diode seems more likely. What did the gauge come off of?

I was taught a slightly more bawdy version:

Bad Boys Rob Our Young Girls But Violet Gives Willingly. :)

DanielDudley 12-11-2017 12:59 PM

That looks a lot more like it Fint, but the numbers clearly read 40 04.

It's a Veglia Borletti gauge out of an 81 fuel injected Fiat Spider 2000.

Edit; Ordered a few anyway.

dad911 03-29-2018 08:35 AM

Just curious, did the diode swap work out?

Forceps work well too if you have some handy.
