Educating our young

Returning home from some pool recreation last night, Cindy & I stopped to top the Bullitt Mustang off with 92 Octane no alcohol premium. Yes, it's available at a few Oregon stations. You pay dearly for it, but I figure the Bullitt is worth it. Another silly Oregon law is that it's a no-no to pump your own gas here...so always a pump jockey.

Well, this pump jockey was a cute little brunette, maybe all of 18. Probably her first ever job. As she inserted my card in the pump she said she loved the green...

Me: "Yeah. Only Bullitt models get this green."

She: "Bullet?"

Me: "You ever hear of Steve McQueen?"

She "No."

Me: "The movie Bullitt?"

She: "No."

So then I gave her the tale of a long ago movie that still has the best car chase scene ever filmed.
I urged her to search youtube and see the chase. I hope she did...or at least asked her grandparents if they remember the movie.

Yes Virgina, long ago, in a country that no longer exists...

Each generation is further removed from the last. What we did for entertainment in the late 70s is now considered ancient history, and probably borderline Amish/Puritan. The irony is, that she probably brought that chase scene up on her phone, as she walked back into the filling station....instant gratification !

That movie, and that car made a profound impression on us young car guys who watched it with enthusiasm. There is so much "entertainment" literally at our fingertips now, that great movies/car chase scenes are now lost in the crowd.

The first Gulf War is farther from her birthdate than June 4, 1944 is to yours (ours).

I have properly educated my sons as to both Bullitt and Steve McQueen. In fact, my son has a small cactus he received as a gift when he was a freshman in college that he named Steve McQueen.

Errr...the end of WWII is past my birthday. Yes, I'm old. The pump Jockey girl looked to be barely out of diapers to me. I had to have looked absolutely ancient to her. Indeed, time flies.

Not quite as get off your lawn as most of you.

I got pulled over the other day and the cop noticed my fake ID behind me real ID, busted out laughing asked where I got it and sent me on my way with my fake ID.

McLovin to the rescue.

I never knew about the Bullitt mustang until you got your car.

I'm just not a movie watcher.

For your benefit..a partial clip of the chase scene. Filmed in the days before computer tricks. All actual stunt driving performed by great drivers...

Looking forward (hopefully) to a 2018 green Bullitt Mustang. I would sell my 40th anniversary convertible GT to buy that one in a few years.

that was the movie that started me looking for fast rises in the road so I could leave the ground with the car, actually hard to find. I had a good friend that did the same thing in a Austin sprint over those launching rr track crossing of old. Only when he launched he went so high when he came down his front end landed before the wheels touched, ouch. He was lucky to walk away from that one.

^^^ Ouch! I was old enough when the movie came out to realize that even without the warnings of today it was a "don't try this at home" event.

I wish I could get self replicating while driving repairs similar to the regenerative hubcaps the lead car was equipped with.
