Acceptable picture size of Pelican?

Good news = I got a new digital camera for (early) Christmas.
Bad news = It takes such hi rez pictures I can't simply upload pictures from the memory card.

What size do I need to reduce them to upload? (new pics are 10-12MB)

The native upload is 800x600, but anything 2MB and less and the software will automatically reduce the size for you.

So what you really want/need to know is 2MB and smaller.

Or you could do like another poster and hotlink gigantically ridiculously huge pics that you can only see 20% of at any given time.

Those are always fun.

In my experience, there are two ways to go about this.

First- If you are taking pic you might think will go to PP.
Set the camera to medium or low resolution. You can take a buttload of pics of 'random transportation pictures' and such and they will all upload to pelican.

Second- If you are taking a pic of something important- like a solar eclipse- take it in full resolution, and then reduce to a lower quality image on photoshop or some other program.

For the most part- getting into the camera and reducing it there is good for 95% of the shots.

edit- if you are dealing with a 10- 12 mb camera- before you take the shot- ask yourself- "where is this going?" A car pic of someones girlfriend hanging over the hood should be a medium/ low resolution pic. A pic of some fantastic sunset in paradise- go high resolution and edit it elsewhere.

10-12 mb is not that big of a pic these days. My canon is 21mpix. It is small compared to the newer 40+ resolution cameras. I have to get into my mind (and remember) "where is this pic going?".... RAW?, JPEG? highres? low Res?

Think in those terms before you even make the shot.

I was marveling at the pic that 'that poster' put up...beyond frustrating.

IMHO the resolutions are reversed.....

One of my cameras saved high and low res versions of each pic, could that be an option?

Windows has a built in snipping tool, I often bring up pic on screen then snip the section I want to post or email, I believe it saves as screen resolution.

Okay--- so to clarify.

If you are taking a pic of YOUR girlfriend hanging over a car. Take in HIGH RESOLUTION and then reformat as needed to share (which you shouldn't- just because).

If you are taking a pic of "Someone's" girlfriend, take in LOW RES and upload to PP as needed (which you should- becase it's your civic duty.).

edit#2- If it is "someone elses girlfriend"- take in as high of resolution format as PPOT will allow for the PPOT viewer's benefit (not necessarily defaulting to low res).

I always wondered why that happened.

Can the poster not see how huge the pix are?

Yeah, I know... just got the camera and started playing with it (24 meg). It has multiple setting and I'm just starting today to dig into all the menus, I believe default is to save a JPEG and a RAW every shot (thou I'm not seeing any RAW images on the memory card, more searching in the 300 page manual to figure that out.)

I was lurking around some photo forms and they echoed your recommendation to adjust the rez for the intended use.

But being a guy I just figured "lets crank this baby up and see what it will do!"

I'm a recovering 35mm guy and still intimidated by the hundred of settings on these new fanged cameras!

And get off my lawn!

PS: I do have photoshop but that means dragging out my old computer and firing it up, being my first experiment with the camera only got two or three nice pictures out of a dozen or so.

Thanks for the help.
