So true. I have a skeet area on my farm, we have a launcher as well as hand throw. I have hosted a lot of really good shooters, some with pricey iron, some with K-Mart Specials. It is, at a certain point, more about practice than the shotgun.

If that was me shooting there would be a full tub of shell casings and a bunch of clays you could pick up and reuse. I seriously can't hit anything that's in the air.

I almost never clean my Remington 1100 autoloader and it never jams. I also have Citori Hunter. I've never shot the top barrel.

I use the cheapest Beretta OU out there for sporting clays. It was the same price out the door as a Citori at the time.

It has 32" barrels and weighs a ton (compared to a field gun) but if you do a couple of rounds back to back you'll appreciate the extra weight. It's also a clays gun - no auto safety - which can really jam you up if you shoot someone else's gun after you got used to it.

My buddy spent 2x as much on a far far prettier step up Beretta but usually ends up paying for lunch, even with a 10 handicap. The other guy I go with shoots a base model Citori he spent $350 having custom fit and kicks my ass every time.

So as everyone else said, it's the ground to gun interface that makes the difference, not the engraving on the thing.

Unless I really suck and just hate it, they shoot every Wednesday here and sometimes go to Sarasota on the weekends. So if it’s like most things I do I get a little anal and will want a purpose built gun.

I’ll start with the Citori, but most likely I’ll want something else if I start shooting reqularly. I started pistol shooting also in the last few years and bought several handguns. But I definatly shoot the match grade gun at targets better than the others.

It will probably be a couple of weeks before I start. On wendsday they shoot doubles, 50 targets. I don’t know what a respectable number is, but I have to start somewhere I guess.

I also checked the date on my Citori, it’s a 1988, I special ordered it new. So I’m due for a new shotgun. We won’t talk about the rifles and hanguns I’ve bought since then.

My birthday is in May so my wife can pick me out something by then. I may even tell her what she bought.

I hear ya on the guns. They are like potatoes chips....one is never enough.

Once, when I was shooting skeet, a fellow named Roger was trying to help me. He started to say “Chris, if you want to shoot consistently..” but I cut him off and said “I *already* shoot consistently Roger - I miss 50% of them every time.”

My brother and I like to refer to the unbroken birds as “the ones we release to the wild for breeding purposes.”

Most important is gun fit. All sporting shot guns shoot well, but consistency in gun mount requires over and over practice. I shoot Sarasota weekly. I suggest you meet Dennis Bosch who works out of Sarasota Sporting Clays and is a great instructor. He will help you with your mount, gun fit and improve your score's.

My advice on a shotgun is a 20 gauge with 30 inch barrels choked with IC and LM. Almost all traps in the stations in sporting clays are within 25 to 30 yards. You want a gun that is well balanced and can swing smoothly.

Gave it a try today, I hit 29 out of 50. Shot 10 shots at 5 different setups, all doubles. Hit the first 9 out of 10, I should have quit there. After that I had some trouble with the second, high shot that was falling, and a left to right that I thought would be easy. I felt like I was shooting behind on those.

I’m going to give it another try, I left room for improvement. There were about 20 guys shooting, the better scores were low 40’s.

the modern Winchester trap guns aren't bad either, made in same factory as the Brownings. You pay less for the name, and they are a bit less decorative.. But they go bang bang every time.

Well I’m still trying. Got my new gun yesterday and shot 34/50 today. Previously I hit 29,24, and 26. 34 at least put me in the lower, middle of the pack range with the 20 or so shooters. I was actually not last. The new gun seams to fit a little better, and it’s a 12 vs 20. I think the best was 44-45. Not many hit 40.

I’m going to get with the instructor and shoot at a pattern board next week to see if I need any more adjustments. I just raised the comb to where I could see down the rib.
