VPN to Hughes satellite

Rural living has its drawbacks. My wife is now working from home but needs to connect to a VPN. Our ATT DSL is the best non satellite service we can get. It's way to slow for her chores. Hughes was our only alternative. She told them she needed to connect to her VPN before we agreed to haveHughes installed. The salesperson said although it might be a little slower then advertised it will be fine. Well, she can't get connected at all. We aren't smart enough to figure out the issue. Customer service had her do all kinds of switching of cables and wires without success.
Anyone out there with some experience with Hughes? Cancelling Hughes after its already installed is a whole other issues.

We tried it with our Dish Network account (think they use the Hughes satellite system), this was a few years ago but as has been said very slow. Just been using our smart phones for internet and email at home.

I'm another one in the Hughes sucks camp, here it's called Xplorenet. Totally forget it if you need upload speed. They also reem you if you go over your download max. Short answer is it was expensive and a beyond crap service.

We have a WISP set-up sort of a radio wifi deal, but reception can be affected by bad storms and not long ago the tower was damaged by a wind storm and we were without internet for about a week. The big drawback is it needs line of site, so not everyone can get it or you need an expensive tower, were lucky our house is high enough.
That aside it has been pretty good and way cheaper service with no limits.

How does she connect? Client, ssl vi browser? See what options are available from work and try them all. Generally satellite and vpn arent two words you dont want to use together.

If you just got it hooked up there should be an opportunity to back out of the deal.

Yup, minimum ping times will suck. Only matters if you are playing online games or doign high frequency trading.

It is possible to blow your monthly download limits in a day or two. You can get better service and a lower rate during off peak times, but that will only help if her job is the graveyard shift here in the states.

I'd re-check on DSL - find out how many feet you are from the connection point, further out will lower max speeds OR reliability. I'm on the edge of service - 1.5mb was rock steady, 3mb would disconnect every 10 minutes and take 2 minutes to reconnect.

Have her check with her IT folk about exactly what the VPN is needed for - instead of presenting applications via remote desktop over VPN it may be possible to run the apps locally for her and only send the actual data back and forth, this would make a very slow connection much more tolerable.

If none of that works, then ask about a second phone line with a second DSL service and bonding the 2 connections together.

If that fails, look into a leased line and consider getting a big pipe and selling connectivity to neighbors via a co-op.

Well....my wife is raising hell with the Hughes net customer service people. The rep said they would cancel the service and contract. Man o man....my labor to dig trenches to bury the cable was all for naught. Kill me...I'm out!

This. Big difference between a remote desktop connection and transferring large files to network shares/drives.

Rural internet...what a challenge!! Left DC with 100 mbs, came to rural CO and had nothing for 2 years. Considered satellite, but the horror stories kept me away. Last June, Peak Internet, the local ISP, started a new system with LTE....can shoot through the trees, promised 15 mbs...worst 6 mbs. Since then I've averaged maybe 5 mbs. Because it's a "new technology" they've claimed everything for why it isn't performing as promised. I've complained constantly, with the tech here nearly every 2 weeks...no breaks on the fees! They've now said they're working on hardware again and asked another 2 weeks. At this point I'm considering Hughsnet 5th gen...am dieing for someone to try it (say they can deliver 25 mbs) but am wary based on the same thing/experiences everyone here is reporting. Any takers on 5th gen?

Mine is fifth generation....works better than my DSL but no way getting 25 mbs. There is a company here that is putting in fiber optic. Might be a couple years before they get to my part of the county though.
