Moka Pot for coffee?
it looks so simple. i've never tried it. my Cuban friend's family used one when we were young. i dont remember ever having coffee at his house. we did raid his dad's liquor cabinets.
what's the deal? any good? is it a PIA to clean? seems like i could balance one on top of a backpack stove. ![]()

We call those a La Pavoni around here. Yep they work OK. My mom had one when I was a kid.
Personally I feel it burns the coffee. But just my opinon. 1,000,000 Italians can't all be wrong. |

It is schit. Don't let anyone tell you it is even close to espresso. The base is so small, most the heat of the gas burner or electric stove go to waste and heat the handle. I do a drip coffee when camping in a #2 cone. For home I have a Jura automatic and a Moccamaster Drip coffee machine.

Everyday. I use French roast ground somewhat fine. My favorite? Add a little almond milk to cool it off. Better tasting than cow milk.
My one concern is the aluminum. Makes me wonder if will giv me dementia. |

I like the Moka pot - especially for an Americano.
If you want to put it on your backpacking stove - check the pot diameter. There are multiple sizes available. Mine is a little to small for my MSR whisperlite. A piece of wire mesh screen helps. No, it isn’t espresso in the pure sense, but it’s good! |

Moka, I spent my entire youth making Espresso every night for my family. There's an art to it. Don't pack the coffee and take it off the stove as soon as it spurts its last spurt. DON'T screw the pot together too tight!
We called "La Maganette". I have about 8 of those pots of varying sizes.

Ok. I will eat my words from above. Yes, I have used my Moka pot for the last five years daily until this Christmas...
The wife spoiled me with a lovely espresso machine and grinder. I have been converted. I whipped up two frothy shots this morning. Same beans as before. There is a fruity (I know, fruity) flavor and a lovely crema that the Moka pot just doesn't have. Value? Goes to moka pot. Best drink? Espresso. No question. |

Moka is commonly knowns as a "greca" in Dominican Republic and used often. Bit more bitter taste than a French press. Have used them both extensively and prefer the press.
