The Year in Review - How did 2017 Treat You?
 

2017 was one of the most chaotic in my memory. Huge changes took place. I'm still a wreck from it all.

New buyers committed to buying my Corp and I was going to retire in January. Almost immediately a perfect storm of fickle clients and incompetent vendors put the company in a revenue crisis. I had to stay on another 6 months to help them straighten things out. Finally took the training wheels off and closed the deal in August.

Three houses in our neighborhood changed hands and our sleepy little 'hood turned into a hellscape of barking dogs, lawnmowers, leaf blowers, and chainsaws. We had put the final finishing touches on our house remodel in 2016, now we faced moving to a new place and starting again. A year ago I would never have believed I would be moving to a new home by Christmas. Our quiet retirement and doing what we want to do every day instead of doing what we have to do is put off for at least a year.
The 911 engine is still in pieces and will remain that way for another year.

Arthritis in my feet finally got so bad I scheduled surgery. Kept postponing it because of the the above. Left foot goes under the knife in February.

I feel like I aged 10 years in 2017.

Thanks to all you Pelicans whose advice and friendship have helped me keep what's left of my sanity.

If'n it were me, I'd roll back that aging process about 9 years in '18 and catch up :). That "to do" list with your new place will never be any shorter than it is now...oops...oh well...

I just can't afford to lose any more of my sanity
though...

A wise man once posted here recently as I recall...."it isn't stress that kills you, it's how you deal with it"....at least he sounded wise at the time :)

The Good
After nearly 10 years in the desert, got myself a Porsche again
Went 3 laps on Spa Francorchamps
Was guest at the British Passchendaele Centenary
Went Gliding over the Alpilles in France
Got a ride in a Leopoard tank, on public roads
Got my finances in better shape

the Bad
Overworked. Stress issues at the end
Need to unwind and get grip on a couple of things

The year treated me well , we purchased our retirement home , sold our existing home and I retired on 12/1/17 . Wife and I seem to be healthy so very little to complain about . I will refrain from political comment :rolleyes:

2017 can go to hell, it started out OK, and had a few good camping trips with friends, but by June, I was working 10 hour days mandatory, and feeling like I was being buried alive at work (often times work overtime late or going in at 4:30 am). Regardless of my constant medication regimine, my heart pumping efficiency factor (EF ratio) went from 40% (a normal heart functions in the 65% range), in December to 35% in April, to 30% in July, and down to 25% in October, which prompted getting a pace maker/defibrillator installed in November by a team of specialists in Columbus OSU Wexner center.


I had to delay the pacemaker to wait until I was no longer getting weekly chemotherapy treatments. All of this added up to huge copays, and reaching my out-of-pocket limit again.

I'm hoping in 2018 for no doctor's visits other than successful checkups, I'm also going to try to be more positive, smile more, and bark less.

Overall a good year for me. Minor health issues that cost me more to deal with but fortunately I had the finances to manage it and have no lingering impact. Added another ex to the collection and honestly that is a good thing. Most importantly the family did well too. Any complaints that I might make have no merit whatever.

Mixed year:
Got the rental house's mortgage paid off. Fought the doubling of property taxes and partially won (more reasonable now). Got new great tenants in there now and got the place looking a little better for them. Still have a lot more work to go.

Got my own house fixed finally with the right time/right people/right price. It was a problem for a decade but is finally done. Also fixed a mysterious water leak which was heading towards becoming a big problem.

Got a decent FSX flight sim system, and having an absolute blast travelling the globe, but paid wayy too much for it. I should have gone with 64bit X-Plane and dowloaded free Ortho photoreal ground textures.

Got heavily subsidized exchange health care with high deductible. If it's really bad I won't have to worry so much. One full year of not smoking cigarettes although I'll be buying Kach a cigar one of these days perhaps. Gained weight as a result. No good deed goes unpunished. One thing at a time.

Getting back into the dating scene after a LTR ended. Still down a bit about that one but I don't control another's mind/heart and the world always changes and always will.

Dads wife passed away with terminal illness but she was ready to go. A sad chapter closed.

My year was like an elevator operator's. Up and down.

Wow, what a year. Health stuff makes other problems pale in comparison. Praying for a healthy '18 for you.

2017 was for me a good year.
I gigged at the Bistro bi-weekly, had about 12,500 visitors at the Tidal Power Center, visited good friends on Vancouver Island and best of all, my daughter got tired of her controlling boyfriend and now has her own apartment and a job.
You can talk all you want, but until they are ready to make it happen themselves, you might as well save your breath.

Quite possibly the worst of my life.
Divorce after 37 years, house gone, unemployment.
And that was the good stuff!
No seriously, I have my health, and the rest of my life to explore new options.
Old hobbies to be revisited, get to challenge myself in new ways, 2018 is shaping up to be a great year.

Excellent year, new house and blew the dust off my old project car, closer to finish than ever. This was the one that was supposed to be finished after the 911, but got sidetracked then money tightened up.

2018 will be even better.

A very good year, we purchased our retirement home, which we needed to rent out for 2-3 yrs until we retire. Closed on 12/21 and had it rented, starting 1/1/18, on 12/27. Great luck, with immediate coverage of expenses.

Business has been good. we have two big clients who went on a retainer basis, and we're seeing a lot more income from them, as they grow.

Finished getting the new engine in the 72E broken in, and drove the snot out of it. The 69T is just about back on it's feet again, with a refreshed fuel system...tank to carbs.

Investments have performed very well, and we managed to consolidate our various inherited accounts into one brokerage for easier tracking.

I hope 2018 is better yet.

It certainly sucks, but most people I talked to didn't even know I wasn't feeling well, I either hide it well, or don't complain nearly as much as most others do.

Gotta go with this one for 2017. We had good health and employment, but I had an overwhelming sense/feeling of indifference to so many things around me. Sort of "meh". Must be getting old...

Some time around October, I was ready to hit the reset button and usher in 2018.

Let's see, I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at 54, my mom is going downhill fairly rapidly with memory issues, my baby sister was diagnosed with breast cancer right before the holidays.......

But, our two boys got married to great gals, two youngest girls got engaged to great guys, youngest boy and wife are due with a baby in less than a week, all kids are healthy and doing well in their careers, all of our houses are filled with animals that make us smile, my beautiful wife continues to think I'm an ok guy, other than the health issues mentioned above, we are healthy and have more to be thankful for than we deserve!

Oh dear. Some of you guys have really seen some hard times. Sorry about that.

Me? I have gained twenty pound of fat from my wifes cooking but otherwise life kind of just keeps rolling by.

You know, I look at the Elissa thread, think back to one where a member was diagnosed with Prostate cancer, see what Ckelly and others have gone through and the first thought that pops into my head is that I've had it pretty damn good. Thanks for the perspective and my hope for the New Year is that all of you see good health!

tons of RAIN this time last year for months on end jacked things up badly. it was the busiest winter of my career. plain wore me out.

then the wildfire.

other than that..pretty kickass. i'm at the point they are all gonna look pretty good..i'm gonna focus on the good.
