I think the non-chlorinated stuff smells worse and is not as effective... Not sure why.

chlorinated brake clean creates an incredibly noxious gas if you try welding anywhere near it, at least it sure does with TIG... spray it anywhere in my shop and you had better not strike an arc for at least 30 min.

I have used both. I see no big difference although some claim chlorinated works better. I use the non-chlor mostly because it doesn't have the fire/phosohine (sp?) gas concern. Neither are good for you to breathe.

My experience is the non chlorinated stuff does little or no damage to most plastics if some overspray gets on it. It also has a lot less odor, MO

I've been told that the Chlorinated stuff is much more effective (albeit also dangerous if you inhale heated vapors) but the cost is quite a bit more. It is a fantastic cleaner for drip trays, oil change catch bucket, and the bottom of the block after an oil change.
