I read that on another site today. What's shocking is that some of them stopped, although I guess the theory is that you can't outrun a radio or possibly a helicopter. Mostly bikes, but a few cars, and a few at ludicrous speed.

Only one went faster than I did on the public road. Not a proud moment, I admit, in hindsight I do not think I would do it again. I will say that the CGT I was racing was most likely VERY surprised a FC RX7 could run with it and pull on it up to 175. I could not resist, when he hit his loud pedal I downshifted and did the same. What happened next surprised us both.

Got pulled over in my 911 in the smokey mountains, was going down a long hill doing 95 mph with a Mini Van passing me on the left pulling ahead ever so slightly, I glanced over, it had kids bouncing around inside not in car seats. We got lit up by instant on radar, I could have ran... easily, but slowed down to see who was getting pulled over. Guess who got pulled over and got the court date?

I've been in the high 150s many times on public roads. Remote areas of Eastern WA, OR, Montana.

Fastest I've ever gone on a public road was 140 in my '88 Carrera coupe. It was early on a Sunday morning on Rt 20 in Louisiana.
The fastest certified speed on a public road (certified by the Illinois State Police, cost - $65) was 79 in a 65 zone. I had been doing about 105 in my Mercedes and got caught in a speed trap set up by the ISP. I was "timed" by an airplane, but I don't think they knew how fast I was going, just that it was too damn fast. A 15 mph over the speed limit required a court appearance and a possible challenge. 14 over almost guaranteed a paid fine with no fuss or muss, so they wrote me up for 79..

A long time ago in a galaxy far away...

A guy traveling on the Sunday afternoon end of a 4 day 4th of July weekend. Was on a divided highway turnpike at around 3pm and amazingly it was trafficless. Not a car in sight either on the hills in front or behind that he could see. All alone just cruising along in a 928GT.

Decided it was as safe a place and time to check out the 928. Sped up a little and checked out how it handled. Not just cruising, changed lanes to get the feel of the car. Then he would go a little faster and check it out again. At one point he could feel the car take an aerodynamic set. The car kind of raised just a little then nosed down and sucked itself to the road feeling more stable than just a couple of mph slower. From then on the steps up in speed felt the same handling wise. It felt like he was going 70mph except the trees and overpasses went by noticeably way faster.

He was admiring how safe and stable the car felt, almost leisurely when the radar detector went off Beeeeeep. Immediately lifted, but didn't hit the brakes. The detector only beeped for 3 seconds then went silent. Keeping off the go pedal letting the car slow he looked around for the source of the interruption.

The car slowed really quickly to that point it took the aerodynamic set. Just as it slowed to that point the radar detector went off in earnest, beep beep beep beep beep. The driver had not found the source, but figured he was nabbed so put his foot back down maintaining a speed just above the aerodynamic set point.

After about a minute the detector stopped. He didn't. Keep going at his current speed until after he passed the next turnpike on/off access point. He decided nobody was after him and still no traffic so resumed the handling exploration.

I figure when the car first got hit with the instant on the officer did not believe the read out so he rebooted the radar painted the car with the regular Xband and got the much lower read out. Could just imagine the office pointing the gun at the 928 and reading it he immediately banged the side of it and turned it off and back on. Like, what? No way...is this thing broken?

My sister and her husband picked up a Porsche at the factory in Stuttgart in 1986. They drove, legally, on the autobahn, covering 450 miles in exactly 3 hours for an average speed of 150 mph. He was a professional race car driver so it was OK.

They must have stopped for gas and turned back towards Stuttgart, and not included that in the story.
