BMW's reclaims world record for longest drift... again
After Toyota beat out BMW for the Guinness World Record for the longest drift, BMW spent some time figuring out how they were going to beat the record again... in some over the top fashion. They thought it'd be a great idea to have an M5 refuel the other M5 attempting to break the record mid-drift. Check out this BTS snippet, and stay tuned for the actual world record stunt video, which releases tomorrow!

Just the kind of capability I look for in a fine automobile.:rolleyes:

Not a fan of this at all, especially if you're telling me to constantly drift over 89 miles.... I'd be completely over it real quick. It's cheating too, using water to make it easier to slide. They had to have done it to keep the tires from shredding. I do admire the work they did to come up with this nifty (but completely ridiculous) way to refuel though. I'll just wait till tomorrow to see what they did anyway though!

Technically interesting, for about a minute.
Completely pointless. Did I mention that I hate drifting? |
Maybe they should concentrate on making the cars more reliable instead. Now THAT would be a good record to set.

What if they could refuel on the mulsanne straight at 200 + mph?

Car companies (including BMW) want to sell service (highest profit margin) and new cars. They don’t want you to buy once and never come back to the dealership (sorry, “Center”) for years. I designed a couple of BMW dealerships earlier in my career (early 2000s) and I can absolutely tell you it’s ALL about the service portion of the business. They want to sell service, service, service. |
NOW I'm going to buy a BMW.
;) |
Here is the re-fueling in action

I would get bored of sliding in the same direction, on the same circle for 8 hours. Would be hungry and need a restroom break too, haha.
Technically since they hit each other and corrected, it should mean they broke the drift.... shouldn't that DQ them from breaking the world record? |
Absolutely worthless information but thanks for posting.

Are there any tech innovations that might come out of stunts like this? Improvements in tire wear perhaps? Improvements in software related to vehicle control? I'm a chemist not an engineer so just spit balling here.
