The HEALTH thread

Thought I'd start a thread about health related stuff.

I'll start off with this article:
Benefits of Unsweetened Cocoa Powder

I had lunch with a buddy today and he mentioned Cocoa Powder as beneficial for the joints, but in reading this article it looks like it has quite a few other significant benefits.

Quote:

Flavonoids are the plant-based substances responsible for many of cocoa’s health benefits. There are many different types of flavonoids, but cocoa is a good source of two: epicatechin and catechin. Natural unsweetened cocoa powder has 196 milligrams of epicatechin in every 100 grams of powder, compared with unsweetened chocolate squares which have 142 milligrams and dark chocolate candy with 84 milligrams. Sweetened cocoa mix and milk chocolate have even fewer flavonoids. The flavonoids in cocoa function as antioxidants that help prevent systemic inflammation. Epicatechin relaxes the muscles in blood vessels, which improves blood flow and helps lower blood pressure, according to research published in the March 2012 issue of the “American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.”
The article also has a couple suggested serving tips.

Feel free to post anything you have run across that might be useful!

Does this include chocolate that has the powder in it ? While typing this, I am eating a Hershey's Special dark chocolate bar....one of my favorites.

If the list of ingredients includes Cocoa Powder, then yes - you are going to get some of it inside of you.

Whether or not you will benefit the same way as from another form of Cocoa Powder - I don't know.

Handy helpful Hint for health.

I had aching lower legs, feet plus hands and wrists. And thought darn my arthritis is back. I used to have it very badly as a kid. Well, I had a magnesium suppliment and I'm fine.

+Good hint Bill. More of this in the thread.

I was disappointed to find shrimp on the "AVOID" list.

Also found this.

Test finds 60% of raw shrimp tainted with bacteria, including superbug MRSA
https://qz.com/390712/your-shrimp-could-be-carrying-a-deadly-superbug/
Quote:

Raw, farmed shrimp from Bangladesh and India were the most likely to carry bacteria, with 83% and 74% tainted, respectively. Raw, wild-caught shrimp from Argentina and the United States were the least likely to be tainted, at 33% and 20%, respectively.
I do like this shrimp sold at Meijer, tastes like lobster.

Meijer’s Argentine red shrimp are fantastic!

However in other aspects outside of taste it's given low score.

Shrimp Recommendations from the Seafood Watch Program
Quote:

Summary

Argentine red shrimp caught in Argentina's Southwest Atlantic by the industrial bottom trawl freezer fleet is on the "Avoid" list. The high amount of bycatch is a serious concern in this fishery, and it includes several at-risk species. Also, it's unknown if a bycatch reduction device aimed at minimizing the catch of juvenile hake also reduces bycatch of other species. This fleet generally freezes shrimp at sea. This recommendation does not include the inshore bottom trawl fleet, which generally lands fresh shrimp. Seafood Watch is currently developing a recommendation for that source of Argentine red shrimp.
Moderation and rotation of so-called good foods seems to be the healthy approach. This is bad news for those that like routine and don't want to think too much about what they are eating.

Once a week shrimp of any kind it's going to sway my health in once direction or another if I'm doing everything else right.

And keep in mind the campaign against eggs a few decades ago, opinions and attitudes change over time.

The claim is there is something in chicken broth that help the white blood cells go to where they need in your body. When you achy with a cold or flu is it the white blood cells just circulating everywhere. So it makes you feel a lot better.

Wear support stockings, even if you think you don't need them.

Unless there is a compelling reason not to, take a baby aspirin before travelling and wear the support stockings.

I wears shorts so support stockings would look a little wonky, Tob. :p

Never heard the one about baby aspirin. What purpose would that be for?

Yes Baz you are maybe not old enough to justify it but for the last ten years I have been taking a baby aspirin a day plus my bp meds. I believe the aspirin thins the blood and reduces the chance of a heart attack. So far so good...:)

Health? No time for it now. Except for a microwave oven we have no cooking facilities in our new house and no kitchen sink. The dishes are all still packed away.
We do have a working refrigerator and coffee maker!
I had a deli ham sandwich, potato chips, and coffee for breakfast this morning. And yesterday morning, and the morning before that. Dinner yesterday was a Marie Calendar pot pie, no lunch.

Evans, Marv 01-22-2018 09:07 AM

Yes, the 81 mg. aspirin is supposed to thin the blood somewhat and reduce the probability of heart problems. My doc recommended it a long time ago. I also read some years ago long term (15 yrs. +) use of aspirin somewhat reduces the possibility of colon cancer. Whether true or not, that interested me since my father died from it.

Tobra 01-22-2018 09:28 AM

Anti-platelet effect from Aspirin, reduce the chance of blood clots.

I wear long pants to work, so it is not too bad.

Jandrews 01-22-2018 05:50 PM

First of all, this is a great thread! What a great idea to just post up random things that we are doing that are good for us. Well done, Baz.

Tobra...interesting recommendation on the support stockings (even if you think you don't need them)...especially coming from you with your credentials.

Can you elaborate a little on the why/benefit, and maybe make a recommendation on a comfortable pair for the average joe (who doesn't think he needs them)?

Thanks!

JA

Just do what I do.

Keep the children coming. Always have at least one child in the age of 2-5 years. That will keep you going and feeling young. Both physically and mentally.

Dear God. I am so tired.

I had a dermatologist appointment this morning. I go every 6 months. This time I told them about the tender spot on the scalp sorta above my ear. Hurts like **** when the barber hits it with the trimmer. Skin is very thin here.

Of course they need to remove it and do a biopsy of it. So she sticks me with the needle to numb it up. HOLY CHRIST THAT HURTS!!!:eek::eek:I have NEVER been in so much pain. I got dizzy and nearly passed out. The needle was in for about 30 seconds and it was an 13.5 on the pain meter.:mad::mad: I had to lay back and put my knees up.

It's been about 2 hours now and the numbness is wearing off and it's starting to hurt again. I may go home. :(
