2015 vw tdi advice
I am looking at used TDI's at the VW dealers. My friend just bought one and they are dirt cheap. Looking at Jettas for less than 14K loaded. The emissions warranty is for 8 years and includes the turbo and the injectors. I commute 40 miles each way in an F150, am I missing something or is this a great deal? mileage is anywhere from less than 10k to 25k on them.

Great cars! Get a manual transmission if you can and don't get the sunroof...they leak.

They aren't that cheap around here. I will have to check again, but they look to be in the high teens / low 20s. I have a 2011 (original owner) that I am returning in December. It cracked the DPF and I am driving with the check engine light on. I am not happy about that, but otherwise it was near flawless for 100k miles. Just did the last service and much of the underpinnings look new, including all suspension and driveline components. So, with an 8 year warranty which IIRC includes the DPF, I'd go for it at 14k. It has saved me a lot of money on gas - 35-45 mpg.

I bought a new 2017 Jetta SE 1.4t gas for about $18k in Dec 17. Been getting about 32-33mpg combined, over 40 on highway trips. My neighbor bought an end of year 17 Jetta S recently for around $15k, same engine. When you look at miles per dollar instead of miles per gallon, at least around here, the price difference between 87 regular and diesel makes the gas model the better choice. New 18s are 6y 72k bumper to bumper warranty, but I haven't priced them vs the 17s.

The 2015 is the motor to get, it was much better than the earlier motors, we got 60 mpg average on our 1200 mile trip from Dana Point to SanFran and back. I was going to keep the car and take the money plus repair until we went to sign the papers. We ended up getting a new Golf with almost the same equipment package for 20k, they paid us 28.5 k for our not quite two year old with 65k miles on it so all said and done we got a new car, new warranty and a check for 5.5k dollars. The new one is gas and I can buy a lot of gas for five thousand. This is my wife's third Golf since 2010, she loves them.
