Orion Constellation

Watched a show on History Channel a couple of days ago about the Orion Constellation.
It says that several ancient structures were built to mimic the constellation.

All pretty fascinating, but the most fascinating to me was the Hopi Indians.
They built villages to mimic almost the entire constellation, not just the belt.
How did they accurately measure these great distances over rough terrain?

How did the Egyptians not leave behind smoke residue in deep chambers. What did they use for light?

Orion was high in the sky when I got home last night and I stopped to admire it and thought that it is probably my favorite constellation and one of the few I can regularly identify.

It's not surprising so many ancient civilizations mimicked it. It's one of the most recognizable constellations and so easy to see that even a spatially challenged dufus like me can make it out. The stars are unusually bright and look like they were put together. Anyone who paid attention to the sky would naturally focus on Orion.

The ancient Egyptians probably used a highly refined oil that didn't leave much reside and used as little of it as possible. They didn't know about oxygen, but they understood they were working in enclosed spaces and needed to preserve their air.

They eat too much spinach on Orion.

We often to think that the ancients were not as intelligent as we are now. That is simple not true, they were no different than us, just saddled with lack of learning and often a very oppressive church or state religion. The Egyptians and the Greeks and Romans all built some astonishing buildings. No aliens, no supernatural magic, just the brains of home-sapiens and the hands with opposable thumbs, and a lot of hard work.

It is really amazing to me that there are still today stone age peoples living and surviving right now. No industry, and the only metals they have is from trading with the civilized world.

The native Americans were a 100% stone age people when the white man brought fantastic technology like metal cooking pots, and guns. And unfortunately a lot of horrible diseases.

They used a combination of shafts that have been closed off and mirrors.

The special burning oil is a new one I haven't heard before.

This is where the Egyptians believed their Gods resided and it’s guardian was Osiris, the God of the dead and rebirth.

The show Ancient Aliens has a few episode on pyramids. Some say they were generating power from a chemical reaction. I wonder if we'll ever figure it out the truth?

They had batteries for sure, some suspect that they were used for religious magic tricks of some kind. Artificial light? I've not seen anything on it until today, see video far below.

In the case of many of the pyramids: by building your interior, then roofing over it, no lighting required unless working at night.

A lot of them also do have soot from visitors/looters.

Its the tunnel networks that were kept hidden until modern times that are perhaps a little more of a mystery. Although oil burning lamps could be it.

I was hoping to just have a little fun instead of being serious. :)

My dad is one of those that thinks they had arc lamps.

I do find it interesting just what things have been invented that were lost/forgotten in war/famine/migration.

The German's had movable negative air foils for competition cars that never got to production because of WWII, those ideas were lost as the engineers died, were imprisoned, or pressed into service for other countries by the end of the war. It took decades for that to get re-invented once again, and only now do we understand what some 1938/1939 drawings actually were of.

Orion is my favourite part of the sky, its over my house at night when I walk up.

The trees often block it, but I also like Ursa Major.

The Pyramids are roughly 4500 years old. That means 2500 BC. Old Kingdom. Burial practices were a bit different earlier on than later in The Valley Of The Kings.
