Hey Aviators...
What do you think the Capt. is thinking??

longer version w/ go-arounds included

Probably " this is where I earn my paycheck" or "I've got a few more years before I'm replaced with a computer"...
|
I would think that when the airspeed becomes virtually unreadable because the airspeed is extremely erratic then it is time to think that going to the alternate is preferable. :)
|
Probably thinking it would be much easier if there were another runway heading available.
He is probably also thinking he is glad they don't have those stupid round runways they talked about months ago. |
I don't know what the pilot was thinking but landings like that will turn an atheist into a praying person.
|
He must have had a date that evening, a really hot one!

I'll bet that was a helluva a ride! |
Gotta wonder what he/she thought as they were damn near perpendicular to the runway at touchdown....geez
In the second vid, maybe the 4th or 5th plane touches down and then...boom, headwind blasts them straight up in the air...wow |

One of those days that you wished you were on the ground wishing you were flying than being up There wishing you were on the ground.

Haha! Love that vid! One of those days when the crew earned it's paycheck in a big way. Been there, done that many times in my 26+ year airline career. Most good pilots I know LOVE days like this, believe it or not. You get to actually WORK HARD at your craft all the way to touchdown and beyond.
(I'll add to my comments by saying I'd have way more fun in that sort of stuff in a big Regional Turboprop or RJ, because they're responsive and do exactly what you want WHEN you want. The Airbus 320's I fly nowadays (319, 320, and 321) are a different story. They can get squirrely and its not hard to get out of phase with the airplane in gusty conditions like this, which is why you see so many narrow body Airbusses in these vids ALL OVER the place. The KEY is NOT to over-use the control stick - to 'stir the pot", as they say) Yes, the passengers come off the airplane as white as ghosts, or green. |
We all say "I Can Make It"
|
Pilot: If we go missed, we go direct our alternate.
Co-Pilot: What's our alternate? Pilot: BACK HOME! |

I have a feeling that a computer flying the same approach will err on the conservative side. That may be fine but how many go-arounds will be acceptable? The human pilot may want to hang it out just a little longer to get the wheels on the ground - and do it successfully. What if the conditions are at or near minimums, does the computer shoot the missed approach over and over, go to the alternate airport, how does it decide?
