I don’t think anyone in Philly that saw it will ever forget that perfect playoff game, or the way he treated Chooch after. A class act all the way.

I'd argue he was the greatest Blue Jay so far . . . It sucks we won't see him enter Cooperstown in a Blue Jays cap.

He should go to the hall immediately, and as a citizen of baseball. We were lucky to have him here for a short time, you guys got an entire career. Listening to sports talk radio this am, and its amazing the amount of love for him among his teamates and others in the organization; hell, even the garage attendant loved him.

Saw online yesterday there is amateur video from some fisherman or friends that were watching him fly the plane . According to them he was hot dogging or show boating by going up to 100 ' then down to just above the water .
Apparently on one of the attempts to get near the water he either misjudged or something went wrong .

The lead Icon test pilot took off in an area where he couldn't clear the trees and didn't have space to turn around. He was basically in a different area of the lake that he thought. It had nothing to do with the plane or his ability to pilot the plane and everything to do with his navigation.

That Icon is still an awesome instrument of flight machine .
I still lust. There were probably previous incidences with the particular pilot that 'should not have been survivable' ordinarily. |

I don't think the issue is the aircraft, but they do show a lot of low level sight seeing in their marketing which I think is a bad idea for enticing new pilots. Especially in the LSA category.

It looks twitchy even when flying straight and level.
I imagine that's part of the allure. When I had my 911 corner balanced and ride height adjusted, it was nuts how much better the handling was. But it also felt a little twitchy, too. Not in a bad way, just a constant reminder of how responsive it was. Sounds like he was putting it through it's motions. Just a spirited jaunt to get the blood flowing, right? And apparently he bit off more than he could chew. Sad ending. Prayers of Peace and Strength to his family.

When I had my flight exam (seems like decades ago) I was made very aware of human/pilot perceptions with respect to illusions of speed & distance which can & may occur when flying over smooth water. Or put another way, the danger of being a low hour novice, low flying & manoeuvering - especially over water.
I was fortunate enough that my flight examiner was an ex WWII Spitfire pilot (something like 5000 hrs.)whose exam was very much akin to a high-end dual session. He made it very clear to me this was a situation in which one is to be very aware of precisely what is going on. On a historical note with a degree of similarity, a probable spatial dis-orientation among other contributing factors, was involved in JFK Jr.’s fatal crash over water. It should be noted he was flying at dusk & low visibility which surely would have compounded matters. It turned out that if he had remained calm & believed his ADI & not relied on his other senses before tightening up the corkscrew of his death spiral, he could have recoverd. The lesson is clear; lack of experience & common sense coupled with an unjustified degree of arrogance invariably leads to a tragic outcome. In the final analysis - this tragic accident, like so many others, was so avoidable or preventable. JB

Sounds like Roy was alive after the crash and no one thought to jump in and check. Plus he had some chemicals in him that may have altered his judgement.
