The 427 in a 65 or 66 Mustang is a death wish as the car is squirrelly. Even in a 72 Mustang it can get out of control quick.

My 69 Mach with the SCJ just squats down and runs like a scalded dog. I also am sitting on a standard bore 427 center oiler with dual quads. It came out of a 63 1/2 Galaxy.

Mercedes-Benz used a mix of Girling and ATE at the same time on the same cars in the '70s and '80s, I guess that one or the other could not supply all of the calipers they needed on the big selling cars like w123 and w126, etc.

Annoyingly, they use very similar but not identical pads and you need to know which ones you have when ordering. These parts and components are still widely available today, though, so I guess it's mass produced stuff vs. Lamborghini.

Lamborghini had a few things, mainly incidental minor parts that were shared with later cars. Essentially nothing was available from the parts houses; there were not even listings for those cars. The calipers weren't so much a problem, as brake hydraulic components typically used off-the-shelf seals in common sizes, but the rotors were unobtanium. The rumor was they were originally sourced from some obsolete BMW production car, but I never figured out which one.

Ironically, the lack of availability of future spare parts caused me to bail on Ferrari ownership, too. At some point, Ferrari decided they did not want to be in the business of supplying parts for the older cars, that would be something the aftermarket could take care of. I found it annoying that certain consumables were just going to dry up and go away and decided that somebody else needed to own that problem.

I was going to mention that finding a Drive Shaft for a 275 GTB is impossible. There was a guy making them but you would have to wait for him to make a production run of them. Which might be years...meanwhile your stuck on the side of the road.

Another one was Rotor caps for Dino's.

Not sure if why you would need a new driveshaft but even still, that would be a minor detail on a $3M car. You're evaluating it like it's a Toyota PU truck.

Remember the trans is in the rear and the drive shaft on the early ones was supported by bearings. If it got out of alignment or burned a bearing at rpm? Later cars used a Torque Tube to solve that problem.

Yeah but the problem is the wait for the guy to make them. He has to tool up to make them so he ain't gona make one at a time.

So what is a 3M car worth without a shaft and how much are you willing to pay to have one made? By now it is probably way north of 10k? As who has the know how and or patterns?

Now there ya go, you just had to set me off didn't you? If you had to start fabricating parts for a Toyota PU on a one off basis you would soon have a 3M Toyota PU. Your statement really highlights your ignorance. You don't realize that a Toyota PU is so cheap because it is a product of the Global economy of scale, where they produce millions of em. That brings the unit cost way down so that the average guy can afford one. Now start to think what your cost of living would be if most things that you use were not mass produced. You simply could NOT AFFORD it..

So my query has been if a crisis hits and a Global depression sets in and parts mfg go out of biz...fairly soon the on hand parts supply would dry up and you would have to start to make do...as in CUBA or the car would be sitting by the side of the road as parts are unobtainable. So those are the ramifications at all levels of modern life of a failure..

We all have become COMPLACENT and take for granted (as being normal) the luxurious life style that we enjoy especially in the USA.

speeder 01-30-2018 09:29 AM

I agree w you all the way but $10k for a part on a $3M car is insignificant. On an ordinary car, it could send it to the junkyard.

It would be a major bummer to wait a long time for a driveshaft but OTOH, no one is depending on that car for transportation.

I was told there wouldn't be any math, but the way I see it a $3,000,000 car that is missing a $10,000 driveshaft is worth $2,990,000

I'll have my admin assistant double-check ;)

Finally got the plating done, wow, what an experience uncovering old plating and finding hidden gems underneath and then making it all as new. Clear cadmium, nickel and a little yellow cadmium. The nickel pieces turned out to be brass jewels. Ended up finishing the surface of those pieces by hand to get the right brightness. Challenges included lead solder, silver solder, white metal threaded inserts (these dissolve almost instantly in acid) and getting the right surface finish, clear cadmium being the most difficult of all plating types I do. What a great job this was.

Uncle had a 300SL and a Masarati.

For me the 275 would be my choice. It has a great look. I could never just own a car and not drive it though.
