What to do in Manhattan?
 

My wife and I are taking a three day weekend in the city at the end of February. I'm not a City person, this is all about her. SmileWavy

We are middle aged empty nesters (one son working as an Engineer, the other two in college) so after 30+ years together we are getting back to doing things together instead of always planning around kids. :D

We / she have already done some of the typical things - Ellis island and the statue of liberty, the Twin towers, she has been to some shows and St. Pats.

We are going to Wicked (which she hasn't seen) and the Met. I don't yet know what else she has planned. I though that I would try to propose a couple activities. So I'm asking for a little help.

What is the thing you would do while you were there? Restaurants, bars, museums, shows, odd little parks - we don't know the city but we are open to a lot.

USS Intrepid (has a lot of cool stuff including the Enterprise space shuttle atmospheric test vehicle). Ground Zero memorial. Even Battery Park can be fun.

We have been to Ground Zero and Battery Park with the kids.

I have been on the Intrepid - I actually did some professional consulting on board a few years ago. I would go back in an instant but this is about her, we will see what she says.

Helo ride around Manhattan. Pricey but incredible.

My wife doesn't like heights and she's a bit claustrophobic - flying really isn't for her. She's pretty leery of elevators - she will use them but she doesn't like them. So I took the kids to the top of the Empire State building, but she found something else to do while she waited.

Pity for me because I'm an aviation enthusiast. I've been up the Hudson corridor in both a light plane and in a Citation, we also circled Manhattan at minimum altitude in the Citation (before 9/11) .

Helicopter rides and really tall buildings are mostly out.

My two favorite things to do would involve art museums and restaurants. You can Google which museums are there faster than I can type them, but there is some world class art available to view. It's probably too late to get into the truly great restaurants in New York but there are 1000 others that are worthy of consideration. Again, I don't know your tastes but I would strongly suggest you look and see what's available to you there.

My wife enjoys wandering around a bit in some of the big dept. stores, like Bergdorf's, Saks Fifth Ave, Bloomingdales, etc. Check out the Apple store. Don't miss the shoe floor in Saks. NYC can be pretty cold then, plan indoor stuff.

Guggenheim Museum is a must.....as is MoMA (Museum of Modern Art).
USS Intrepid is fantastic with the Shuttle, Concorde and the A-12 Blackbird as well. There's also a submarine there USS Growler..

Central Park on a weekend morning when the roads are closed...

I'd also just wander down Park Avenue and linger at the cross roads with East 53rd Street... with the Mies' Seagram Building, the Gordon Bunshaft Lever building catty corner and the newly completed Foster and Partners 100 E 53rd completing a trio of seminal modern buildings...

Cross bridge into Brooklyn and eat a steak dinner at Peter Lugers.

I think that she is already planning the Met and the Gugenheim. There are other great ideas above.

Okay, what are your favorite types of food?

I would suggest museums over galleries, as you'll see better art in museums and what's selling in galleries right now is not that impressive to most people.

I guess we are supposed to assume you mean Manhattan, NY and NOT Manhattan, Kansas. ;)

There are some great feed lots and open plains to see in Manhattan, KS. The prices are a LOT less. No skyscrapers however.

I would prefer KS to NY. Her, maybe, but not this trip.

We like a variety of food - not to spicy for her. She doesn't eat before noon so breakfast is out.

We like Italian, Chinese, Thai, Mexican, Greek, seafood and standard american. We're open to trying different things. We aren't vegan and we don't have dietary restrictions.

I don't think that she's planning on "fine dining" - we do occasionally, but we are more likely to go to a steak house or a good ethnic restaurant.

Well Manhattan Kansas is likely not the place to go for vegans. Some huge cattle feed lots and steak houses. The vegan restaurants are going to be hard to find in the Kansas location. The NY version will have every possible ethnic restaurant known to mankind, but not one cattle feed lot.

The museum of natural history is really cool. Most museums of natural history have a few dinosaurs but the New York museum of natural history has most of the dinosaurs :)
