A bullitt Mustang story that's actually interesting.

The Original Bullitt Mustang Has Come Out of Hiding

Great the car was still driven. Not so great is the care of the car.

Great story!

In looking at the two - we see a work of art on the right - and a big pile of doo do on the left.

YMMV, of course.....

Okay, I'm just lazing around the house today. Time for some investigation.

The R&T article references a hole in the trunk that might have been used to enhance the tire smoke in the famous reverse burnout scene.

Soooooo, I went to the Youtubes and found the burnout scene, and you know what? They might be right! That shot is taken from the drivers side view, and we all remember the tire smoke and axle tramp when he slams her in reverse. Problem is, that car has a pegleg so when he tears off going forward we see from the back that only the passenger side tire is smoking!

Movie trickery? Could be! Maybe Steve saw the rushes and wanted a smoky burnout, and this was a quick and dirty way to accommodate him!?

(Has anyone ever counted the number of times those cars pass the green VW Type 1?)

The lower nose of the new Mustangs steps away from tradition, but I think it looks great overall. A bit of Aston Martin/Jaguar influence.

Ford marketing idiots.. Don't they realize that getting that old car out in the sun makes their new piece of sjit looks worse?

Baz, I normally agree with your comments, but why is the new one not good? Not a proper Bullitt, but still a nice car surely, if you wish for something new and interesting?

A better and more informative write up of how the car came to light:

https://www.hagerty.com/articles-videos/articles/2018/01/14/mustang-bullitt-found-real-mcqueen?utm_source=SFMC&utm_medium=email&utm_term=tdbridge@comcast.net&utm_content=Newsletter_Special_Bullitt_Mustang

Actually, I feel sorry for the owner. I know what it feels like to have a car wanted by the wrong people for the wrong reason. Not that any of the pressures I was subjected to were anything close to what this poor bastard is now going through. For me, it became such a pain in the ass I couldn't wait to shed myself of the car and go on with life. The value had nothing to do with it...

That's a great read. $6000 was a LOT of money for a beat-up 68 Mustang in 1977. So he did pay a premium of at least 3X, maybe 4X. He knew what he was buying and that it was very special to pay that kind of money.

"Los Angeles panel beater Lee Brown pulled the badges, ran steel wool on the factory-fresh paint, and even put dents in the door to make the car fit with McQueen’s character"

How long before we see the 'Special 2018 Steve McQueen Limited Steel Wool Paint & Dents Edition'?

Hey Matt......purely a matter of personal preference. No offense to anyone, of course.

Part of it may be that at 63 years of age I grew up with what I consider to be the greatest generation of sharp looking and very distinctively styled automobiles. Not only cars but our whole society seemed to cherish style "back then" more than today. Today it seems to be all about convenience and performance.

I look at clothing and structures and to me they don't really have anything distinctive about them, so it's not just "this" car....it's pretty much all of them!

Just glad I lived through those awesome years......

Yes, certainly a lot of good stuff back them, no question. i have one in my garage

I'm a little younger (not by much), and I adore old things full stop. But that new Bullitt Mustang is a long, long way from driver-less cars, with autonomous steering and a big screen TV where the third person used to sit, and as such I think it should be applauded, and recognized as a relatively cool thing, in 2018.

Exactly. Instead of elitist types slamming the car, they should be applauding Ford for making a car with a normally aspirated V-8, rear wheel drive, a bit of overall performance, and a manual transmission.

My niece works at Hagerty in Traverse City and sent this pic. The car is on display in their lobby and they're showing the movie at a local theater for the employees.

There is 24/7 security guarding the car.
