Anybody Know About Chinese Loose Leaf Teas?
Starting last summer I started making Sun Tea on a daily basis. A blend of Jasmine Tea, Olong or Green Tea and Hybiscus flowers. It was really good..and I have actually felt better by drinking them.
This winter I have started to drink hot tea...and as such went down to the local Chinese Market....one store in paticular has a good selection of Loose and Tea bagged teas... So far I have tried loose leaf Jasmine, Formosa Oloong, Gun Powder, Tender tip Green, Lunghing green, White Tea Bai Mundan, Lichee Black tea, and Pu Erh..... I especially like the Pu Erh ....But what I can not find is PU ERH CAKES...Anybody have any sources???? Also I have been kind of stuck on the more commerical imported brands such as Foo Joy, Heavenly Temple, Whole Dragon... I am wondering if there is a big jump in quality from these commerical brands to botique on line selections? There are so many different varietys that it is mind boggling...and I am just begininng on the journey... So it is Kielbasa and Chinese tea.....an electics dream...

I've been stuck on loose leaf Chinese teas for a while. I buy from the store below, both by going to Chinatown SF and online. Formosa and GunpowdEr are my favorite. I like bitter teas.

Tabs, I'm sure you can find everything you want at the Ranch 99 on Spring Mtn. Rd. They have a good tea selection. Mrs. Lee can help next time we're in town.

There is a BIG oriental market on Spring Mountain and Decatur...that devotes a whole side of one long aisle to nothing but different teas... I can spend half an hour just looking at different tea varieities...and companies..

are the prices cheaper at the store than online.... Do you notice a better quality tea from these people vs say a Foo Joy grocery store tea? Is it worth the extra dinero? The Pu Erhs are something different...have you tried them... I wonder what this stuff costs in China? from a reputable merchant?

I didn't compare prices between online or other shops nearby. I chose to buy from this particular tea store because of the reviews on Yelp and the personal service I receievd there.
I have not tried Pu Erhs but I will. Peet's Coffee has a good selection too but I think Red Blossom's teas taste better and are more authentic. |

Isn't there a Tea station on Spring Mountain Road? Maybe they can direct you. Around here, there are these tea specific places where you can get all kinds of loose Chinese tea leaves in bulk. Loose leave tea is the only tea I will drink. Not in a bag, that for the English.

Hi Tabs,
I am quite into tea myself, though my taste goes for more of the black teas. I think you should be able to find the bricks or discs of pu erh online, but if not I have a good source here in KL and would be willing to pick some up for you. There are a fairly wide variety of pu erh qualities... How much do you want, and how much are you willing to spend? Feel free to PM me.

i've been chinese all my life. grew up drinking tea.
to be honest, i have never seen my family members or friends get all detailed on the type of tea. i've never met a chinese tea aficianado. i know they are out there..there are some big tea houses around here. my parent order "bo ley" which is a dark, strong tea. and my inlaws order "gee po" which is half bo ley with a bunch of chrysanthium tossed on top. a blend of sorts. beside strength, i bet i couldnt tell the difference.

My spousal unit buying tea in Xi'an....She would not let me into the store while she was shopping.... Qwielo pricing would have been in affect if I went into the store with her ... Some teas in China are very expensive..hundreds of $/#

I have collegues bring me back tea from China. I was there 1 year ago and really, really liked tea. I would be hard pressed to use tea in a bag. I brought back a tea set which is very cool.

Back to Tabs. I was drinking my favorite this am when I read your post. I prefer Dragonwell loose green. Very light and delicate. Lots of caffeine as well. It is called something else in the asian tea stores that I forget and need to point and buy. The tea lady just laughs.
The gun powder is about 180 degrees from Dragonwell. Gun powder is strong, rough, and cheap. I call it chinese no-collar tea as I think it is the tea of the poverty class. I still like it however. The Pu Er is tough. My wife bought me a tea tasting a few years ago. We had a cup of tea that was a mistake. The guy said it was about a $45 cup of tea. I personally disliked it. I think Pu Er tastes like dirt. However, he said that Pu Er is like wine. Older is more money. LOTS more. I have bought small and large compressed disks of Pu Er at different shops but never the good stuff. I think that stuff is only sold in niche businesses. There are some cool tea stores in San Francisco Chinatown. Not super far from you. It is fun to shop and taste. My tastes are relatively cheap as well. Have fun. Larry |

Hey Tabs,
This is a seattle shop that recently closed and became mail-order only. They sell Pu'Erh, but I don't see any mention of cakes, so I'm not sure if this fits what you're looking for. Teacup

I drink Ceylon Hills from Sri Lanka...two (4 cup) pots per day.
Great stuff. I have not tried the Chinese teas, but again, it seems that whatever tea you like is "good tea". JA

Can't say I 'know' tea, but I really enjoy it; just finished a pot of Gunpowder. As has been mentioned, it's a bit rougher (more tannic) but I like that. Favorites are: Dao Ren, Dragonwell, Gunpowder, Gyokuro Imperial, and Sencha (but that's Japanese, I think). I have a fairly strong dislike for flavored teas and coffees, so these are real 'Joe Friday' teas.
Peet's is a decent source at a reasonable price. Have also bought from Buy Tea Online: Green tea, Oolong tea, Black tea, White tea, Herbal tea and more! | Teavana and gotten very good teas.
