what is it with Beans and Rice?
i've never had red beans and rice..this is a New Orleans thing?
i eat a lot of beans. figure the fiber and the protein thing is good for me. last night; my pot of "pork and beans" was just a tad too salty. i rallied and put it over a pile of plain white rice. my wife came thru the door, like a honey badger (rough day at work). and i had plans to tell her i bought gun parts. (permission versus forgiveness argument). the meal was so good!! calmed her down and i survived the gun parts show-n-tell. i'm gonna google red beans and rice. rice + beans; it is the oddest combo..but so good!! |
Three words to remember...
Huey, Louie, and Andouille.... The last one seals the deal....ask G ;) |
Red beans and rice is a New Orleans thing, though their version typically has a metric tonne of sodium in it and just as much pork fat. (Still delicious.)
Why did you tell your wife that you bought gun parts!? ;) |
Beans and jalapeno cornbread...
|
It is a pretty solid staple all over the world (what is a Mexican combo plate without beans and rice?)
Not sure if it is specifically a New Orleans thing, go into almost any soul food restaurant and you will see greens, grits, and beans&rice. I do my lazy white boy version, rice in rice cooker, throw in a can of drained black beads, shot of hot sauce, push button. |
In the freezer got a precooked bag of a five rice blend boiled with homemade broth. Ready to go.
Black red wild brown and basmati i think. It's actually purple but nutty&earthy and oh so good. That's one possibility for half that equation. |
Breakfast in Costa Rica...beans & rice with eggs. Yum.

Maybe the rice was added to help cool it down?
I made a really good batch of turkey and bean chili recently but it was too hot/spicy. I added a little bit of canned hominy to it and it tempered it down without changing it's flavor or character too much. |
I usually just do the Zatarains box and some turkey kielbasa or andouille. Makes an easy weeknight meal and there's always leftovers to take to work the next day.

there is a place around here that has killer black beans and rice.
there use to be a place that had great red beans and rice. personally I don't like a lot of stuff in mine. we have tried to make it but most of the time it just does not have the flavor of restaurants, don't know why. but when its good, its really good. cant tell where you are from but if that is the first time you have had beans and rice you might try: chicken bog - trick here is to cook the rice in the water you boiled the chicken in. also has sausage. frogmore stew. (shrimp, sausage, corn on the cob and red tators all in a pot. with crab boil seasoning). hint, do the sausage, tators and corn first, then add the shrimp or they will be over done. this is best outside in a cast iron pot over a fire |
My family eats a lot of pinto beans.
Soak fresh, dry beans, cook, add salt and fresh black pepper when soft. Goes with rice, burritos, you name it. Good tasting and good for you. |
Red beans and rice feed the world. Africa, India, the Mediterranean, the Caribbean, South America, Central America. Good food value, tastes good, low cost. I usually go there once a week or so.

Interestingly enough, beans and rice provides you with all the essential amino acids. Essential amino acids are the ones your body can't manufacture for you. Pasta and marinara sauce does the same thing for you. Upshot of this is, you can live on it and not ever have to eat meat to get your protein.

We met a Costa Rican who said it was beans & rice for breakfast, rice & beans for lunch, and beans & rice at dinner , just to keep it from getting boring.

There was a place I loved to go for beans and rice when I was in Puerto Rico. They were simply heaven. I asked the waitress what they cooked it with to make it so dang good. Answer- a ham hock.
Fast forward another decade. Love of my life is an amazing cook. One of the things she makes well is beans and rice. Well, I make the rice, she likes corn bread with her beans. So, then I end up with both. Anyway, she puts in a ham hock and it cooks all day long with the beans. I about freaked the first time I saw that thing in the fridge, but I tell you what, it is essential for some amazing beans. Delicious! And yeah, beans and rice and scrambled eggs w hot sauce. Yum |
There are a bunch of ways to improve a bowl of beans and adding rice is one of them. There are many others, depending on the bean in question.
If you want to experience the ultimate bean dish, cook a proper cassoulet. JR |
