My Isetta or Unimog get 10x the attention that the 356 gets

What's funny with driving the 510 around is when someone says they like your BMW. Even had someone comment on how good my Mustang looked.

I do get second looks, thumbs up, an occasional riced out RX7 wanting to race and I once had a truck driver at a Wendy's ask to buy it.

And when I took it to the Toyota dealership to get an alignment, all the mechanics and sales people came to look and take pictures. Same at Nissan dealership, but Nissan service at this one dealer kinda sucks.

Fun little cars to play with.

To each his own. I'd not pay a penny for a 510. Friend owned one in about '83. He thought it was so cool. I thought it was a beat up POS first car for guys our age in those days. It was slow. I mean SLOW! Boring looking. It was a Japanese econo-sedan. That's all. Heck, little Honda Civics were MUCH better cars in those days.

I wonder if the 18 year olds today will be spending crazy money on 2007 Honda Civics in thirty years - because it reminds them of their youth.

Not likely since so many today, don't even drive, more likely to be buying an old iPhone to remember their youth.

Nothing makes me happier than to see the early Japanese cars come into their own, its about time as they were under appreciated for so long and were overshadowed by their European rivals.

In my opinion, these are the Japanese climbers (to name a few):
1) Pre '77 Celicas
2) '83-'87 Corolla GT-S
3) Any Supra
4) Datsun 1200
5) Datsun 510
6) Pre '83 Datsun Z
7) Datsun 520-620 trucks
8) Mitsubishi Starion \ Conquest
9) Isuzu Piazza
10) Any MR2
11) Any Datsun Roadster
12) Any Rotary Mazda and good condition Miata
13) Mazda 323 GT \ GTX

Any factory fitted turbocharged car as these cars typically has better suspensions, brakes, interior, aggressive body kits

I'd love to have a Mazda rotary pickup.

I have always thought these were super sharp cars.

Couldn't agree with you more, and ALL the cars on your list. Between me and my friends we had all those except for two.

+1. I can barely drive my 914 anywhere without being approached by some one who used to own one, had great times with a friend who owned one, or currently owns one. With the 911 I’m lucky to get a nice car.

My ‘78 Westy is the same way.

That’s a great list. I had a roommate with a Celica Supra, white with brown plaid.

Think of the 510 as the Japanese 2002... also: supply and demand. More people want them than even the great 2002.

Mighty Datsuns

As 81SC said earlyer in Australia, very popular ,was the same in NewZealand
Many stock 1600 cc where raced in that particular class, and where very competitive
because they are very good and fast at cornering , you can hang the the back end out
at very high speed for a 1600cc car ,and still be very safe and sure footed, and the stock engine had a great reputation for doing high miles before ever needing repairs.
