Ducati Monster 750 - must resist urge to buy !

One issue with being recently retired is the time to surf the net and get yourself in financial trouble I haven't ridden in about 3 years and sometimes I tempt fate and look on CL to see what's out there . I don't know much about ducks but I do know I like the way they look . I have to complete the build of my man cave AND the wife would kill me but this is a nice looking bike ! No affiliation with the seller ........ hey a guy can dream right

I dislike the 750 engine of that generation.

It doesn't feel like a twin at all. just a smooth underpowered sewing machine.

Get the 900 in all its lumpy torquey thumping glory!

Looks well cared for. With the SM exhaust, it will sound good, but don't expect it to be very fast. Which might be just what you're looking for.

For that money you could find similar age, similar mileage 900s. I think the small bore ducs sound fantastic with aftermarket silencers, but they definitely deliver far less thrust than the 900s. They’re not really noticeably smaller or lighter than 900s.

For me top speed is no longer an issue. Torque is where it's at for me. Being able to launch/ explode out of a corner is much more fun than straight line hand o' god speed.

Hell, I barely ride. Happy to take my 900SS out once in a while and put the hammer down a couple times in second gear.

I have had both the 750 and 900s Ducs and personally I would wait for a 900. Just something about that extra grunt and rattling dry clutch.

Apparently not I should not even be looking as I have some projects that HAVE to get done . But I find myself occasionally looking at Nortons , Triumphs , ducks , Yamaha RD's etc. but I have to stay focused.......... for now And my days of high HP bikes is long gone , more concerned with a leisurely pace through the twisties . Plus I have " the beast " if I want to go nuts .

Dayam! I know nothing about Ducks but that looks like a sweet ride!

I am in the same boat, every time there is a bike thread I find myself pursuing CL and drooling over cool bikes. (think I had a thread a year ago about a CZ street bike).

Also like you I am almost ready to retire and my wife would kill me if I bought a bike.

My plan is to retire, tell my wife I'm buying a motorcycle, then use that as a bargaining chip towards purchase of a sports car.

guys tend to sell their Ducati’s right as the mileage says they’re due for an expensive service. Keep that in mind.

And there are a lot of nice older other model ducs to be had at around that price.

But yes, by this weekend we all expect and will applaud you having one in the garage.

2-valve head Ducs aren't particularly difficult or expensive to service. desmoquattro is a different story. my 900 monster never saw a dealer after the one year warranty expired...100% DIY from that point forward for 18 years (including 2 years of AMA roadracing). Apart from a broken headstud (common in 90's up to about 97-98, IIRC), nothing particularly expensive or challenging came up.

See if they will throw in the house in the background of pic?

Motion and Don Ro would tell you to hold out for a Hypermotard 1100 - They have me shopping right now......

You gotta be aware that the Monsters have a pretty aggressive riding position. I prefer the Hypermotard for around town riding. Much more comfortable. 1100 is the bare minimum for shenanigans. KTM 1290 is even better!

2V desmo valve adjustments are not a big deal. The reality is that adjustments are rarely needed...perhaps on account of the lack of a heavy valve spring which means the valve train doesn't experience much wear. In over 30k miles, I may have changed 2 shims? No need to buy a big expensive shim kit either. Use feeler gauge to determine actual valve lash, compare to desired spec and note difference, measure existing shim, add or subtract noted difference to spec and that's the size of the new shim you need --- head to Duc repair shop with your micrometer and find the shim you need from their box of spares...pay them a few bucks, install new shim...button her up and ride on.
