Yes, but the research was for more effective radar, which would have been a government use. Bell Labs was a common government vendor. I would bet dollars to donuts that the funding that payed for that research was coming directly from the government.

Very well documented audio-wise! About as close as I’ve heard compared to actual launches (and I’ve seen several dozen in person having been on the space coast during the 1990s / shuttle heyday). There’s nothing quite like the volume plus the sound of the sky getting torn open (best way I can think of to describe it offfhand). Awesome clip, definitely listen through some good quality headphones!

I sent the link to a friend who's been to a couple of launches (shuttle) and he said the same thing. Very realistic sounding.
I thought it was pretty good myself. I hope others who've never been to a launch try it out.
